Forward comrades ever forward	A
Shout the leaders in the fight	B
Scale the ramparts Plant the standard	A
On the citadel of light	B

On the past's ensanguined grave	D

Toward the strongholds of oppression	C
Lead again the hope forlorn	F
See the night is disappearing	G
Lo the coming of the morn	F

Just as bravely long ago	H
When the hair had raven blackness	I
Which is now as white as snow	H

Have responded to that call	K
Whose forgotten corpses moulder	L
By the still beleaguered wall	K

Proud Byzantium Carthage Spain	U
In their mournful desolation	C
Hear the old sea's sad refrain	U

Rising falling waxing waning	G
Men and nations come and go	H
Reaching glory then declining	G
As the ebb succeeds the flow	H

All florescence is but fleeting	G
Each in turn enjoys its day	R

Form mankind's unchanging role	W
And the dead past's sombre ruins	T

Warrant brighter horoscopes	A2

Sunk from grandeur to decay	R
What shall save us then from ruin	C
Are we better men than they	R

Great inventors say you Granted	C2
Such material gifts are ours	B2
Every age hath some distinction	C
Every race its special powers	B2

But the progress is not lasting	G
And the special powers decline	D2
Man's advance is never constant	S
In one grand unbroken line	D2

Nor is ground once lost recovered	A
Greece and Rome are not replaced	E2
All the sites of pagan learning	G
Still lie desolate and waste	E2

What know we except in physics	F2
That the ancients did not know	H
Are we wiser than the sages	G2
Of two thousand years ago	H

More devout than Hebrew prophets	H2
More upright than Antonine	H
More accomplished than the Grecians	H2
Or than Buddha more divine	H

And if such men could not hinder	L
Fate's resistless rise and fall	K
How can we expect exemption	H
From the common lot of all	K

Let us frankly face the prospect	I2
That man's progress here may fail	J2
That the race may never triumph	K2
But again descend the scale	J2

Till the last surviving savage	O
To his glacial cave retires	H2
And earth's tragic drama closes	H2
As humanity expires	H2

And why not All weaker species	H2
To the stronger yield their place	H2
May the same law not be needed	C2
Through the boundless realms of space	H2

By whatever beings peopled	L2
Worlds that fail to meet the test	X
May like fruitless blossoms perish	M2
God will winnow out the best	X

Would you know our planet's value	N2
View the star strewn dome of night	B
In that shoreless sea of splendor	L
What is one faint wave of light	B

Worlds by millions are revolving	G
Through that vast unfathomed main	H
Should our tiny orb make shipwreck	O2
Worlds by millions would remain	H

Where perchance a real advancement	S
May prevail from pole to pole	W

That our globe will one day roll	W
