Forward comrades ever forwardA
Shout the leaders in the fightB
Scale the ramparts Plant the standardA
On the citadel of lightB
-
Break the chains of superstitionC
Crush corruption Free the slaveD
Plant the flowers of love and mercyE
On the past's ensanguined graveD
-
Toward the strongholds of oppressionC
Lead again the hope forlornF
See the night is disappearingG
Lo the coming of the mornF
-
Bravely said yet men have spokenC
Just as bravely long agoH
When the hair had raven blacknessI
Which is now as white as snowH
-
And alas how many thousandsJ
Have responded to that callK
Whose forgotten corpses moulderL
By the still beleaguered wallK
-
Forms have changed and words have alteredA
But the things remain the sameM
Still doth man enslave his brotherL
Always master save in nameM
-
Still are God's dumb creatures torturedA
Racial hatreds never ceaseN
And man's greatest self delusionC
Is the shibboleth of PeaceN
-
Hence while youth with hope and courageO
Loudly vents its noble rageP
Age profoundly disillusionedQ
Sad and silent leaves the stageP
-
Round the classic Inland OceanC
Where the Roman world held swayR
Storied shores are iridescentS
With the splendor of decayR
-
Persia Syria Egypt AthensT
Proud Byzantium Carthage SpainU
In their mournful desolationC
Hear the old sea's sad refrainU
-
Rising falling waxing waningG
Men and nations come and goH
Reaching glory then decliningG
As the ebb succeeds the flowH
-
All florescence is but fleetingG
Each in turn enjoys its dayR
Hath its seed time bud and flowerL
And as surely fades awayR
-
Growth maturity decadenceV
Form mankind's unchanging roleW
And the dead past's sombre ruinsT
Are prophetic of the wholeW
-
Nay you cry in bitter protestX
Shall man have no perfect endY
No millennial culminationC
Toward which all the ages tendY
-
Must all races prove decadentS
Shall not one produce in timeZ
Perfect types of men and womenC
In a world devoid of crimeZ
-
Scan the lurid past and tell usI
On what ground you base your hopesA2
Does an endless line of failuresB2
Warrant brighter horoscopesA2
-
Hath not every race and nationC
Sunk from grandeur to decayR
What shall save us then from ruinC
Are we better men than theyR
-
Great inventors say you GrantedC2
Such material gifts are oursB2
Every age hath some distinctionC
Every race its special powersB2
-
But the progress is not lastingG
And the special powers declineD2
Man's advance is never constantS
In one grand unbroken lineD2
-
Nor is ground once lost recoveredA
Greece and Rome are not replacedE2
All the sites of pagan learningG
Still lie desolate and wasteE2
-
What know we except in physicsF2
That the ancients did not knowH
Are we wiser than the sagesG2
Of two thousand years agoH
-
More devout than Hebrew prophetsH2
More upright than AntonineH
More accomplished than the GreciansH2
Or than Buddha more divineH
-
And if such men could not hinderL
Fate's resistless rise and fallK
How can we expect exemptionH
From the common lot of allK
-
Let us frankly face the prospectI2
That man's progress here may failJ2
That the race may never triumphK2
But again descend the scaleJ2
-
Till the last surviving savageO
To his glacial cave retiresH2
And earth's tragic drama closesH2
As humanity expiresH2
-
And why not All weaker speciesH2
To the stronger yield their placeH2
May the same law not be neededC2
Through the boundless realms of spaceH2
-
By whatever beings peopledL2
Worlds that fail to meet the testX
May like fruitless blossoms perishM2
God will winnow out the bestX
-
Would you know our planet's valueN2
View the star strewn dome of nightB
In that shoreless sea of splendorL
What is one faint wave of lightB
-
Worlds by millions are revolvingG
Through that vast unfathomed mainH
Should our tiny orb make shipwreckO2
Worlds by millions would remainH
-
Where perchance a real advancementS
May prevail from pole to poleW
Without losses without lapsesH2
Toward a final perfect goalW
-
This at least can not be doubtedP2
That our globe will one day rollW
Cold and lifeless thro' its orbitQ2
Like a corpse without its soulW
-
Will mankind have reached perfectionH
Ere that epoch has begunH
Or grown bestial as the heat wavesH2
Issue feebly from the sunH
-
None may know Through blood stained cyclesH2
We have thus far made our wayR
Of the unknown depths beneath usH2
We are nothing but the sprayR
