Belov'd Meran supremely fairA
With joy I greet thy peaks anewB
And quaff again the crystal airA
That fills thy snow rimmed bowl of blueB
-
Once more through miles of trellised vinesC
The purple bloom of vintage glowsD
Once more amid my palms and pinesC
I breathe the perfume of the roseD
-
Once more as snow crests far and wideE
Flush crimson in the Alpine glowF
I sit and muse at eventideE
On Roman days of long agoF
-
Across the valley steeped in lightE
Uplifted toward the western skiesG
And flanked by many a snow crowned heightE
The stately Roman Terrace liesG
-
Whose fair expanse hath been a stageH
Where actors for two thousand yearsI
Have played by turns in every ageH
Their varying roles of smiles and tearsJ
-
Still through its mighty Vintschgau doorK
The sunset streams in floods of goldE
Still winding o'er its emerald floorK
The river sparkles as of oldE
-
I watch the distant torrent leapL
From ledge to ledge yet hear no soundE
A ghostly path it seems whose deepL
Swift channel cleaves enchanted groundE
-
Beside its waves whose glittering sprayM
Begems the gorge its flood hath wornN
Rome's conquering legions made their wayM
A score of years ere Christ was bornN
-
On yonder mound where frowns the woodE
And curves the road with steep inclineO
A temple to Diana stoodE
Before the age of AntonineO
-
Near Schloss Tyrol's dismantled frameP
I see the ancient watchtower standE
Whence Caesar's guards with smoke or flameP
Flashed signals into SwitzerlandE
-
And nearer yet Forst's stately wallsQ
Loom grandly from the darkening moorR
Where still a dungeon keep recallsQ
The last Tyrolean TroubadourK
-
Belov'd Meran the splendid dowerS
That Nature gave to South TyrolF
Cannot alone explain thy powerT
To captivate both mind and soulF
-
I love thy sunshine fruits and flowersU
I love thy mountain peaks sublimeV
But best of all thine aged towersU
The ivied proteges of TimeV
-
Thus favored while my sun of lifeW
Moves calmly toward a cloudless westE
I crave no more the New World's strifeW
And ceaseless turmoil of unrestE
-
Content within my garden wallsQ
To let the Present's uproar ceaseX
While on my tranquil spirit fallsQ
The Past's sweet benison of peaceX
