O Youth and Joy your airy treadA
Too lightly springs by Sorrow's bedA
Your keen eye glances are too brightB
Too restless for a sick man's sightB
Farewell for one short life we partC
I rather woo the soothing artC
Which only souls in sufferings triedD
Bear to their suffering brethren's sideD
-
Where may we learn that gentle spellE
Mother of Martyrs thou canst tellE
Thou who didst watch thy dying SpouseF
With pierced hands and bleeding browsG
Whose tears from age to age are shedA
O'er sainted sons untimely deadA
If e'er we charm a soul in painH
Thine is the key note of our strainH
-
How sweet with thee to lift the latchI
Where Faith has kept her midnight watchJ
Smiling on woe with thee to kneelK
Where fixed as if one prayer could healK
She listens till her pale eye glowL
With joy wild health can never knowL
And each calm feature ere we readA
Speaks silently thy glorious CreedM
-
Such have I seen and while they pouredN
Their hearts in every contrite wordO
How have I rather longed to kneelK
And ask of them sweet pardon's sealK
How blessed the heavenly music broughtP
By thee to aid my faltering thoughtP
Peace ere we kneel and when we ceaseQ
To pray the farewell word is PeaceQ
-
I came again the place was brightB
With something of celestial lightB
A simple Altar by the bedA
For high Communion meetly spreadA
Chalice and plate and snowy vestR
We ate and drank then calmly blestR
All mourners one with dying breathS
We sate and talked of Jesus' deathS
-
Once more I came the silent roomT
Was veiled in sadly soothing gloomT
And ready for her last abodeU
The pale form like a lily showedU
By Virgin fingers duly spreadA
And prized for love of summer fledA
The light from those soft smiling eyesV
Had fleeted to its parent skiesV
-
O soothe us haunt us night and dayW
Ye gentle Spirits far awayW
With whom we shared the cup of graceX
Then parted ye to Christ's embraceX
We to this lonesome world againY
Yet mindful of th' unearthly strainH
Practised with you at Eden's doorZ
To be sung on where Angels soarZ
With blended voices evermoreZ
