If I have told you earthly things and ye believe not how shall yeA
believe if I tell you of heavenly things St John iiiB
-
-
Creator Saviour strengthening GuideC
Now on Thy mercy's ocean wideC
Far out of sight we seem to glideC
-
Help us each hour with steadier eyeD
To search the deepening mysteryA
The wonders of Thy sea and skyD
-
The blessed Angels look and longE
To praise Thee with a worthier songE
And yet our silence does Thee wrongE
-
Along the Church's central spaceF
The sacred weeks with unfelt paceF
Hath borne us on from grace to graceF
-
As travellers on some woodland heightG
When wintry suns are gleaming brightG
Lose in arched glades their tangled sightG
-
By glimpses such as dreamers loveH
Through her grey veil the leafless groveI
Shows where the distant shadows roveI
-
Such trembling joy the soul o'er awesF
As nearer to Thy shrine she drawsF
And now before the choir we pauseF
-
The door is closed but soft and deepJ
Around the awful arches sweepJ
Such airs as soothe a hermit's sleepJ
-
From each carved nook and fretted bendK
Cornice and gallery seem to sendK
Tones that with seraphs hymns might blendK
-
Three solemn parts together twineL
In harmony's mysterious lineL
Three solemn aisles approach the shrineL
-
Yet all are One together allM
In thoughts that awe but not appalM
Teach the adoring heart to fallM
-
Within these walls each fluttering guestN
Is gently lured to one safe nestN
Without 'tis moaning and unrestN
-
The busy world a thousand waysF
Is hurrying by nor ever staysF
To catch a note of Thy dear praiseF
-
Why tarries not her chariot wheelM
That o'er her with no vain appealM
One gust of heavenly song might stealM
-
Alas for her Thy opening flowersF
Unheeded breathe to summer showersF
Unheard the music of Thy bowersF
-
What echoes from the sacred domeO
The selfish spirit may o'ercomeO
That will not hear of love or homeO
-
The heart that scorned a father's careP
How can it rise in filial prayerP
How an all seeing Guardian bearP
-
Or how shall envious brethren ownQ
A Brother on the eternal throneQ
Their Father's joy their hops aloneQ
-
How shall Thy Spirit's gracious wileM
The sullen brow of gloom beguileM
That frowns on sweet Affection's smileM
-
Eternal One Almighty TrineL
Since Thou art ours and we are ThineL
By all Thy love did once resignL
-
By all the grace Thy heavens still hideC
We pray Thee keep us at Thy sideC
Creator Saviour strengthening GuideC
