As the beginning of thy supplications the commandment cameA
forth and I am come to shew thee for thou art greatlyB
beloved therefore understand the matter and consider theC
vision Daniel ixD
-
-
O Holy mountain of my GodE
How do thy towers in ruin lieF
How art thou riven and strewn abroadG
Under the rude and wasteful skyF
'Twas thus upon his fasting dayH
The Man of Loves was fain to prayH
His lattice open toward his darling westI
Mourning the ruined home he still must love the bestI
-
Oh for a love like Daniel's nowJ
To wing to Heaven but one strong prayerK
For GOD'S new Israel sunk as lowL
Yet flourishing to sight as fairK
As Sion in her height of prideM
With queens for handmaids at her sideM
With kings her nursing fathers throned highF
And compassed with the world's too tempting blazonryK
-
'Tis true nor winter stays thy growthN
Nor torrid summer's sickly smileO
The flashing billows of the southP
Break not upon so lone an isleO
But thou rich vine art grafted thereK
The fruit of death or life to bearK
Yielding a surer witness every dayH
To thine Almighty Author and His steadfast swayH
-
Oh grief to think that grapes of gallQ
Should cluster round thine healthiest shootR
God's herald prove a heartless thrallQ
Who if he dared would fain be muteR
E'en such is this bad world we seeD
Which self condemned in owning TheeD
Yet dares not open farewell of Thee takeS
For very pride and her high boasted Reason's sakeS
-
What do we then if far and wideM
Men kneel to CHRIST the pure and meekT
Yet rage with passion swell with prideM
Have we not still our faith to seekT
Nay but in steadfast humblenessD
Kneel on to Him who loves to blessD
The prayer that waits for him and trembling striveU
To keep the lingering flame in thine own breast aliveU
-
Dark frowned the future e'en on himV
The loving and beloved SeerK
What time he saw through shadows dimV
The boundary of th' eternal yearK
He only of the sons of menW
Named to be heir of glory thenW
Else had it bruised too sore his tender heartX
To see GOD'S ransomed world in wrath and flame departX
-
Then look no more or closer watchY
Thy course in Earth's bewildering waysD
For every glimpse thine eye can catchZ
Of what shall be in those dread daysD
So when th' Archangel's word is spokenA2
And Death's deep trance for ever brokenA2
In mercy thou mayst feel the heavenly handB2
And in thy lot unharmed before thy Savour standB2
