Third Sunday After Trinity Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AB BCBC DEDF GHGH CICI CJCJ KJKJ LMLM HANA COCO PBPBThere is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one | A |
sinner that repenteth St Luke xv | B |
- | |
- | |
O hateful spell of Sin when friends are nigh | B |
To make stern Memory tell her tale unsought | C |
And raise accusing shades of hours gone by | B |
To come between us and all kindly thought | C |
- | |
Chilled at her touch the self reproaching soul | D |
Flies from the heart and home she dearest loves | E |
To where lone mountains tower or billows roll | D |
Or to your endless depth ye solemn groves | F |
- | |
In vain the averted cheek in loneliest dell | G |
Is conscious of a gaze it cannot bear | H |
The leaves that rustle near us seem to tell | G |
Our heart's sad secret to the silent air | H |
- | |
Nor is the dream untrue for all around | C |
The heavens are watching with their thousand eyes | I |
We cannot pass our guardian angel's bound | C |
Resigned or sullen he will hear our sighs | I |
- | |
He in the mazes of the budding wood | C |
Is near and mourns to see our thankless glance | J |
Dwell coldly where the fresh green earth is strewed | C |
With the first flowers that lead the vernal dance | J |
- | |
In wasteful bounty showered they smile unseen | K |
Unseen by man but what if purer sprights | J |
By moonlight o'er their dewy bosoms lean | K |
To adore the Father of all gentle lights | J |
- | |
If such there be O grief and shame to think | L |
That sight of thee should overcloud their joy | M |
A new born soul just waiting on the brink | L |
Of endless life yet wrapt in earth's annoy | M |
- | |
O turn and be thou turned the selfish tear | H |
In bitter thoughts of low born care begun | A |
Let it flow on but flow refined and clear | N |
The turbid waters brightening as they run | A |
- | |
Let it flow on till all thine earthly heart | C |
In penitential drops have ebbed away | O |
Then fearless turn where Heaven hath set thy part | C |
Nor shudder at the Eye that saw thee stray | O |
- | |
O lost and found all gentle souls below | P |
Their dearest welcome shall prepare and prove | B |
Such joy o'er thee as raptured seraphs know | P |
Who learn their lesson at the Throne of Love | B |
