Thomas because thou hast seen Me thou hast believedA
blessed are they that have not seen and yet have believedA
St John xxB
-
-
We were not by when Jesus cameC
But round us far and nearD
We see His trophies and His nameC
In choral echoes hearE
In a fair ground our lot is castF
As in the solemn week that pastF
While some might doubt but all adoredG
Ere the whole widowed Church had seen her risen LordG
-
Slowly as then His bounteous handH
The golden chain unwindsB
Drawing to Heaven with gentlest bandH
Wise hearts and loving mindsB
Love sought Him first at dawn of mornI
From her sad couch she sprang forlornI
She sought to weep with Thee aloneJ
And saw Thine open grave and knew that thou wert goneK
-
Reason and Faith at once set outL
To search the SAVIOUR'S tombM
Faith faster runs but waits withoutL
As fearing to presumeM
Till Reason enter in and traceB
Christ's relics round the holy placeB
Here lay His limbs and here His sacred headN
And who was by to make His new forsaken bedN
-
Both wonder one believes but whileO
They muse on all at homeP
No thought can tender Love beguileO
From Jesus' grave to roamP
Weeping she stays till He appearD
Her witness first the Church must hearE
All joy to souls that can rejoiceB
With her at earliest call of His dear gracious voiceB
-
Joy too to those who love to talkQ
In secret how He diedR
Though with sealed eyes awhile they walkQ
Nor see him at their sideR
Most like the faithful pair are theyS
Who once to Emmaus took their wayS
Half darkling till their Master shiedR
His glory on their souls made known in breaking breadN
-
Thus ever brighter and more brightT
On those He came to saveU
The Lord of new created lightT
Dawned gradual from the graveU
Till passed th' enquiring day light hourV
And with closed door in silent bowerV
The Church in anxious musing sateW
As one who for redemption still had long to waitW
-
Then gliding through th' unopening doorX
Smooth without step or soundY
Peace to your souls He said no moreX
They own Him kneeling roundY
Eye ear and hand and loving heartZ
Body and soul in every partZ
Successive made His witnesses that hourV
Cease not in all the world to show His saving powerV
-
Is there on earth a spirit frailA2
Who fears to take their wordB2
Scarce daring through the twilight paleA2
To think he sees the LordG
With eyes too tremblingly awakeC2
To bear with dimness for His sakeC2
Read and confess the Hand DivineD2
That drew thy likeness here so true in every lineD2
-
For all thy rankling doubts so soreX
Love thou thy Saviour stillE2
Him for thy Lord and God adoreX
And ever do His willE2
Though vexing thoughts may seem to lastF
Let not thy soul be quite o'ercastF
Soon will He show thee all His wounds and sayS
Long have I known Thy name know thou My face alwayS
