He being full of the Holy Ghost looked up steadfastly intoA
heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing on theB
right hand of God Acts viiC
-
-
As rays around the source of lightD
Stream upward ere he glow in sightD
And watching by his future flightD
Set the clear heavens on fireE
So on the King of Martyrs waitF
Three chosen bands in royal stateF
And all earth owns of good and greatF
Is gather'd in that choirE
-
One presses on and welcomes deathG
One calmly yields his willing breathG
Nor slow nor hurrying but in faithH
Content to die or liveC
And some the darlings of their LordI
Play smiling with the flame and swordI
And ere they speak to His sure wordJ
Unconscious witness giveC
-
Foremost and nearest to His throneK
By perfect robes of triumph knownK
And likest Him in look and toneK
The holy Stephen kneelsL
With stedfast gaze as when the skyM
Flew open to his fainting eyeM
Which like a fading lamp flash'd highM
Seeing what death concealsL
-
Well might you guess what vision brightD
Was present to his raptured sightD
E'en as reflected streams of lightD
Their solar source betrayN
The glory which our God surroundsL
The Son of Man the atoning woundsL
He sees them all and earth's dull boundsL
Are melting fast awayN
-
He sees them all no other viewC
Could stamp the Saviour's likeness trueC
Or with His love so deep embrueC
Man's sullen heart and grossL
Jesus do Thou my soul receiveC
Jesu do Thou my foes forgiveC
He who would learn that prayer must liveC
Under the holy CrossL
-
He though he seem on earth to moveC
Must glide in air like gentle doveC
From yon unclouded depths aboveC
Must draw his purer breathG
Till men behold his angel faceL
All radiant with celestial graceL
Martyr all o'er and meet to traceL
The lines of Jesus' deathG
