That ye should earnestly contend for the faith which wasA
once delivered unto the saints St JudeB
-
-
Seest thou how tearful and aloneC
And drooping like a wounded doveD
The Cross in sight but Jesus goneE
The widowed Church is fain to roveF
-
Who is at hand that loves the LordG
Make haste and take her home and bringH
Thine household choir in true accordG
Their soothing hymns for her to singH
-
Soft on her fluttering heart shall breatheI
The fragrance of that genial isleJ
There she may weave her funeral wreathK
And to her own sad music smileJ
-
The Spirit of the dying SonL
Is there and fills the holy placeM
With records sweet of duties doneL
Of pardoned foes and cherished graceM
-
And as of old by two and twoN
His herald saints the Saviour sentO
To soften hearts like morning dewN
Where he to shine in mercy meantO
-
So evermore He deems His nameP
Best honoured and his way preparedQ
When watching by his altar flameP
He sees His servants duly pairedQ
-
He loves when age and youth are metR
Fervent old age and youth sereneS
Their high and low in concord setR
For sacred song Joy's golden meanS
-
He loves when some clear soaring mindT
Is drawn by mutual pietyU
To simple souls and unrefinedT
Who in life's shadiest covert lieV
-
Or if perchance a saddened heartW
That once was gay and felt the springH
Cons slowly o'er its altered partW
In sorrow and remorse to singH
-
Thy gracious care will send that wayX
Some spirit full of glee yet taughtY
To bear the sight of dull decayX
And nurse it with all pitying thoughtY
-
Cheerful as soaring lark and mildZ
As evening blackbird's full toned layX
When the relenting sun has smiledZ
Bright through a whole December dayX
-
These are the tones to brace and cheerA2
The lonely watcher of the foldB2
When nights are dark and foeman nearA2
When visions fade and hearts grow coldB2
-
How timely then a comrade's songC2
Comes floating on the mountain airD2
And bids thee yet be bold and strongC2
Fancy may die but Faith is thereD2
