Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exaltedA
but the rich in that he is made low St James iB
-
-
Dear is the morning gale of springC
And dear th' autumnal eveD
But few delights can summer bringC
A Poet's crown to weaveD
-
Her bowers are mute her fountains dryB
And ever Fancy's wingC
Speed's from beneath her cloudless skyB
To autumn or to springC
-
Sweet is the infant's waking smileE
And sweet the old man's restF
But middle age by no fond wileE
No soothing calm is blestF
-
Still in the world's hot restless gleamG
She plies her weary taskH
While vainly for some pleasant dreamG
Her wandering glances askH
-
O shame upon thee listless heartI
So sad a sigh to heaveD
As if thy SAVIOUR had no partI
In thoughts that make thee grieveD
-
As if along His lonesome wayJ
He had not borne for theeK
Sad languors through the summer dayJ
Storms on the wintry seaK
-
Youth's lightning flash of joy secureL
Passed seldom o'er His sprightJ
A well of serious thought and pureL
Too deep for earthly lightJ
-
No spring was His no fairy gleamG
For He by trial knewM
How cold and bare what mortals dreamG
To worlds where all is trueM
-
Then grudge not thou the anguish keenN
Which makes thee like thy LORDJ
And learn to quit with eye sereneN
Thy youth's ideal hoardJ
-
Thy treasured hopes and raptures highB
Unmurmuring let them goO
Nor grieve the bliss should quickly flyB
Which CHRIST disdained to knowO
-
Thou shalt have joy in sadness soonP
The pure calm hope be thineQ
Which brightens like the eastern moonP
As day's wild lights declineQ
-
Thus souls by nature pitched too highB
By sufferings plunged too lowO
Meet in the Church's middle skyB
Half way 'twixt joy and woeO
-
To practise there the soothing layJ
That sorrow best relievesR
Thankful for all God takes awayJ
Humbled by all He glassS
