When Herod would have brought him forth the same nightA
Peter was sleeping Acts xiiB
-
-
Thou thrice denied yet thrice belovedC
Watch by Thine own forgiven friendD
In sharpest perils faithful provedE
Let his soul love Thee to the endD
-
The prayer is heard else why so deepF
His slumber on the eve of deathG
And wherefore smiles he in his sleepF
As one who drew celestial breathG
-
He loves and is beloved againH
Can his soul choose but be at restI
Sorrow hath fled away and PainJ
Dares not invade the guarded nestI
-
He dearly loves and not aloneK
For his winged thoughts are soaring highL
Where never yet frail heart was knownK
To breathe its vain Affection's sighL
-
He loves and weeps but more than tearsB
Have sealed Thy welcome and his loveM
One look lives in him and endearsB
Crosses and wrongs where'er he roveN
-
That gracious chiding look Thy callO
To win him to himself and TheeP
Sweetening the sorrow of his fallO
Which else were rued too bitterlyP
-
E'en through the veil of sheep it shinesB
The memory of that kindly glanceB
The Angel watching by divinesB
And spares awhile his blissful tranceB
-
Or haply to his native lakeQ
His vision wafts him back to talkR
With JESUS ere His flight He takeQ
As in that solemn evening walkR
-
When to the bosom of His friendD
The Shepherd He whose name is GoodS
Did His dear lambs and sheep commendD
Both bought and nourished with His bloodT
-
Then laid on him th' inverted treeP
Which firm embraced with heart and armU
Might cast o'er hope and memoryP
O'er life and death its awful charmU
-
With brightening heart he bears it onV
His passport through this eternal gatesB
To his sweet home so nearly wonW
He seems as by the door he waitsB
-
The unexpressive notes to hearX
Of angel song and angel motionW
Rising and falling on the earX
Like waves in Joy's unbounded oceanW
-
His dream is changed the Tyrant's voiceB
Calls to that last of glorious deedsB
But as he rises to rejoiceB
Not Herod but an Angel leadsB
-
He dreams he sees a lamp flash brightA
Glancing around his prison roomY
But 'tis a gleam of heavenly lightA
That fills up all the ample gloomY
-
The flame that in a few short yearsB
Deep through the chambers of the deadZ
Shall pierce and dry the fount of tearsB
Is waving o'er his dungeon bedZ
-
Touched he upstarts his chains unbindZ
Through darksome vault up massy stairA2
His dizzy doubting footsteps windZ
To freedom and cool moonlight airA2
-
Then all himself all joy and calmB2
Though for a while his hand foregoC2
Just as it touched the martyr's palmB2
He turns him to his task belowC2
-
The pastoral staff the keys of HeavenW
To wield a while in grey haired mightZ
Then from his cross to spring forgivenW
And follow JESUS out of sightZ
