Behold I will send you Elijah the prophet before the comingA
of the great and dreadful day of the Lord and he shallB
turn the heart of the fathers to the children and the heartC
of the children to their fathers Malachi ivD
-
-
Twice in her season of decayE
The fallen Church hath felt Elijah's eyeF
Dart from the wild its piercing rayE
Not keener burns in the chill morning skyF
The herald starG
Whose torch afarG
Shadows and boding night birds flyF
-
Methinks we need him once againH
That favoured seer but where shall he be foundI
By Cherith's side we seek in vainJ
In vain on Carmel's green and lonely moundI
Angels no moreK
From Sinai soarK
On his celestial errands boundI
-
But wafted to her glorious placeL
By harmless fire among the ethereal thronesL
His spirit with a dear embraceL
Thee the loved harbinger of Jesus ownsL
Well pleased to viewD
Her likeness trueD
And trace in thine her own deep tonesL
-
Deathless himself he joys with theeM
To commune how a faithful martyr diesL
And in the blest could envy beM
He would behold thy wounds with envious eyesL
Star of our mornN
Who yet unbornN
Didst guide our hope where Christ should riseL
-
Now resting from your jealous careO
For sinners such as Eden cannot knowP
Ye pour for us your mingled prayerO
No anxious fear to damp Affection's glowP
Love draws a cloudQ
From you to shroudQ
Rebellion's mystery here belowP
-
And since we see and not afarG
The twilight of the great and dreadful dayE
Why linger till Elijah's carG
Stoop from the clouds Why sheep ye Rise and prayE
Ye heralds sealedR
In camp or fieldR
Your Saviour's banner to displayE
-
Where is the lore the Baptist taughtS
The soul unswerving and the fearless tongueT
The much enduring wisdom soughtS
By lonely prayer the haunted rocks amongT
Who counts it gainJ
His light should waneJ
So the whole world to Jesus throngU
-
Thou Spirit who the Church didst lendV
Her eagle wings to shelter in the wildW
We pray Thee ere the Judge descendV
With flames like these all bright and undefiledV
Her watch fires lightV
To guide arightV
Our weary souls by earth beguiledV
-
So glorious let thy Pastors shineX
That by their speaking lives the world may learnY
First filial duty then divineX
That sons to parents all to Thee may turnY
And ready proveD
In fires of loveD
At sight of Thee for aye to burnY
