Twice in her season of decayA
The fallen Church hath felt Elijah's eyeB
Dart from the wild its piercing rayA
Not keener burns in the chill morning skyB
The herald starC
Whose torch afarC
Shadows and boding night birds flyB
-
Methinks we need him once againD
That favoured seer but where shall he be foundE
By Cherith's side we seek in vainF
In vain on Carmel's green and lonely moundE
Angels no moreG
From Sinai soarG
On his celestial errands boundE
-
But wafted to her glorious placeH
By harmless fire among the ethereal thronesH
His spirit with a dear embraceH
Thee the loved harbinger of Jesus ownsH
Well pleased to viewI
Her likeness trueI
And trace in thine her own deep tonesH
-
Deathless himself he joys with theeJ
To commune how a faithful martyr diesH
And in the blest could envy beJ
He would behold thy wounds with envious eyesH
Star of our mornK
Who yet unbornK
Didst guide our hope where Christ should riseH
-
Now resting from your jealous careL
For sinners such as Eden cannot knowM
Ye pour for us your mingled prayerL
No anxious fear to damp Affection's glowM
Love draws a cloudN
From you to shroudN
Rebellion's mystery here belowM
-
And since we see and not afarC
The twilight of the great and dreadful dayA
Why linger till Elijah's carC
Stoop from the clouds Why sheep ye Rise and prayA
Ye heralds sealedO
In camp or fieldO
Your Saviour's banner to displayA
-
Where is the lore the Baptist taughtP
The soul unswerving and the fearless tongueQ
The much enduring wisdom soughtP
By lonely prayer the haunted rocks amongQ
Who counts it gainF
His light should waneF
So the whole world to Jesus throngR
-
Thou Spirit who the Church didst lendS
Her eagle wings to shelter in the wildT
We pray Thee ere the Judge descendS
With flames like these all bright and undefiledS
Her watch fires lightS
To guide arightS
Our weary souls by earth beguiledS
-
So glorious let thy Pastors shineU
That by their speaking lives the world may learnV
First filial duty then divineU
That sons to parents all to Thee may turnV
And ready proveW
In fires of loveX
At sight of Thee for aye to burnV
