Jesus answered and said unto him Because I said unto thee I sawA
the under the fig tree believest thou Thou shalt see greaterB
things than these St John iC
-
-
Hold up thy mirror to the sunD
And thou shalt need an eagle's gazeE
So perfectly the polished stoneF
Gives back the glory of his raysE
-
Turn it and it shall paint as trueG
The soft green of the vernal earthH
And each small flower of bashful hueG
That closest hides its lowly birthH
-
Our mirror is a blessed bookI
Where out from each illumined pageJ
We see one glorious Image lookI
All eyes to dazzle and engageJ
-
The Son of God and that indeedK
We see Him as He is we knowL
Since in the same bright glass we readM
The very life of things belowL
-
Eye of God's word where'er we turnN
Ever upon us thy keen gazeE
Can all the depths of sin discernN
Unravel every bosom's mazeE
-
Who that has felt thy glance of dreadM
Thrill through his heart's remotest cellsO
About his path about his bedM
Can doubt what spirit in thee dwellsO
-
What word is this Whence know'st thou meP
All wondering cries the humbled heartQ
To hear thee that deep mysteryP
The knowledge of itself impartQ
-
The veil is raised who runs may readM
By its own light the truth is seenR
And soon the Israelite indeedK
Bows down t' adore the NazareneR
-
So did Nathanael guileless manR
At once not shame faced or afraidS
Owning Him God who so could scanR
His musings in the lonely shadeS
-
In his own pleasant fig tree's shadeS
Which by his household fountain grewG
Where at noon day his prayer he madeS
To know God better than he knewG
-
Oh happy hours of heavenward thoughtT
How richly crowned how well improvedU
In musing o'er the Law he taughtT
In waiting for the Lord he lovedV
-
We must not mar with earthly praiseE
What God's approving word hath sealedW
Enough if might our feeble laysE
Take up the promise He revealedW
-
The child like faith that asks not sightX
Waits not for wonder or for signR
Believes because it loves arightX
Shall see things greater things divineR
-
Heaven to that gaze shall open wideX
And brightest angels to and froL
On messages of love shall glideX
'Twixt God above and Christ belowL
-
So still the guileless man is blestX
To him all crooked paths are straightX
Him on his way to endless restX
Fresh ever growing strengths awaitX
-
God's witnesses a glorious hostX
Compass him daily like a cloudX
Martyrs and seers the saved and lostX
Mercies and judgments cry aloudX
-
Yet shall to him the still small voiceY
That first into his bosom foundX
A way and fixed his wavering choiceY
Nearest and dearest ever soundX
