Rhyme Scheme: ABAC DEDE FGHG IJIK LMLM NONO PQPQ RSRS ATAT UVWR TATAWhen brothers part for manhood's race | A |
What gift may most endearing prove | B |
To keep fond memory its her place | A |
And certify a brother's love | C |
- | |
'Tis true bright hours together told | D |
And blissful dreams in secret shared | E |
Serene or solemn gay or bold | D |
Shall last in fancy unimpaired | E |
- | |
E'en round the death bed of the good | F |
Such dear remembrances will hover | G |
And haunt us with no vexing mood | H |
When all the cares of earth are over | G |
- | |
But yet our craving spirits feel | I |
We shall live on though Fancy die | J |
And seek a surer pledge a seal | I |
Of love to last eternally | K |
- | |
Who art thou that wouldst grave thy name | L |
Thus deeply in a brother's heart | M |
Look on this saint and learn to frame | L |
Thy love charm with true Christian art | M |
- | |
First seek thy Saviour out and dwell | N |
Beneath this shadow of His roof | O |
Till thou have scanned His features well | N |
And known Him for the Christ by proof | O |
- | |
Such proof as they are sure to find | P |
Who spend with Him their happy days | Q |
Clean hands and a self ruling mind | P |
Ever in tune for love and praise | Q |
- | |
Then potent with the spell of Heaven | R |
Go and thine erring brother gain | S |
Entice him home to be forgiven | R |
Till he too see his Saviour plain | S |
- | |
Or if before thee in the race | A |
Urge him with thine advancing tread | T |
Till like twin stars with even pace | A |
Each lucid course be duly aped | T |
- | |
No fading frail memorial give | U |
To soothe his soul when thou art gone | V |
But wreaths of hope for aye to live | W |
And thoughts of good together done | R |
- | |
That so before the judgment seat | T |
Though changed and glorified each face | A |
Not unremembered ye may meet | T |
For endless ages to embrace | A |
