When brothers part for manhood's raceA
What gift may most endearing proveB
To keep fond memory its her placeA
And certify a brother's loveC
-
'Tis true bright hours together toldD
And blissful dreams in secret sharedE
Serene or solemn gay or boldD
Shall last in fancy unimpairedE
-
E'en round the death bed of the goodF
Such dear remembrances will hoverG
And haunt us with no vexing moodH
When all the cares of earth are overG
-
But yet our craving spirits feelI
We shall live on though Fancy dieJ
And seek a surer pledge a sealI
Of love to last eternallyK
-
Who art thou that wouldst grave thy nameL
Thus deeply in a brother's heartM
Look on this saint and learn to frameL
Thy love charm with true Christian artM
-
First seek thy Saviour out and dwellN
Beneath this shadow of His roofO
Till thou have scanned His features wellN
And known Him for the Christ by proofO
-
Such proof as they are sure to findP
Who spend with Him their happy daysQ
Clean hands and a self ruling mindP
Ever in tune for love and praiseQ
-
Then potent with the spell of HeavenR
Go and thine erring brother gainS
Entice him home to be forgivenR
Till he too see his Saviour plainS
-
Or if before thee in the raceA
Urge him with thine advancing treadT
Till like twin stars with even paceA
Each lucid course be duly apedT
-
No fading frail memorial giveU
To soothe his soul when thou art goneV
But wreaths of hope for aye to liveW
And thoughts of good together doneR
-
That so before the judgment seatT
Though changed and glorified each faceA
Not unremembered ye may meetT
For endless ages to embraceA
