David said unto Nathan I have sinned against the Lord AndA
Nathan said unto David The Lord also hath put away thy sinB
thou shalt not die Samuel xiiC
-
-
When bitter thoughts of conscience bornD
With sinners wake at mornD
When from our restless couch we startE
With fevered lips and withered heartE
Where is the spell to charm those mists awayF
And make new morning in that darksome dayF
One draught of spring's delicious airG
One steadfast thought that GOD is thereG
-
These are Thy wonders hourly wroughtH
Thou Lord of time and thoughtH
Lifting and lowering souls at willI
Crowding a world of good or illI
Into a moment's vision e'en as lightJ
Mounts o'er a cloudy ridge and all is brightJ
From west to east one thrilling rayF
Turning a wintry world to MayF
-
Would'st thou the pangs of guilt assuageK
Lo here an open pageK
Where heavenly mercy shines as freeL
Written in balm sad heart for theeL
Never so fast in silent April showerM
Flushed into green the dry and leafless bowerM
As Israel's crowned mourner feltN
The dull hard stone within him meltN
-
The absolver saw the mighty griefO
And hastened with reliefO
The Lord forgives thou shalt not dieP
'Twas gently spoke yet heard on highP
And all the band of angels used to singQ
In heaven accordant to his raptured stringQ
Who many a month had turned awayF
With veiled eyes nor owned his layF
-
Now spread their wings and throng aroundR
To the glad mournful soundR
And welcome with bright open faceC
The broken heart to love's embraceC
The rock is smitten and to future yearsC
Springs ever fresh the tide of holy tearsC
And holy music whispering peaceC
Till time and sin together ceaseC
-
There drink and when ye are at restS
With that free Spirit blestS
Who to the contrite can dispenseC
The princely heart of innocenceC
If ever floating from faint earthly lyreT
Was wafted to your soul one high desireM
By all the trembling hope ye feelU
Think on the minstrel as ye kneelU
-
Think on the shame that dreadful hourM
When tears shall have no powerM
Should his own lay th' accuser proveV
Cold while he kindled others' loveW
And let your prayer for charity ariseC
That his own heart may hear his melodiesC
And a true voice to him may cryP
Thy GOD forgives thou shalt not dieP
