Rhyme Scheme: AABB CDEFFE GGBHHB IIJHHJ KKLIIL BBLBBL AALLLL LLGMNA BBOPQO RRBBBB LLBLLBAnd after the earthquake a fire | A |
but the Lord was not in the fire | A |
and after the fire a still small voice | B |
Kings xix | B |
- | |
- | |
In troublous days of anguish and rebuke | C |
While sadly round them Israel's children look | D |
And their eyes fail for waiting on their Lord | E |
While underneath each awful arch of green | F |
On every mountain top God's chosen scene | F |
Of pure heart worship Baal is adored | E |
- | |
'Tis well true hearts should for a time retire | G |
To holy ground in quiet to aspire | G |
Towards promised regions of serener grace | B |
On Horeb with Elijah let us lie | H |
Where all around on mountain sand and sky | H |
God's chariot wheels have left distinctest trace | B |
- | |
There if in jealousy and strong disdain | I |
We to the sinner's God of sin complain | I |
Untimely seeking here the peace of Heaven | J |
It is enough O Lord now let me die | H |
E'en as my fathers did for what am I | H |
That I should stand where they have vainly striven | J |
- | |
Perhaps our God may of our conscience ask | K |
What doest thou here frail wanderer from thy task | K |
Where hast thou left those few sheep in the wild | L |
Then should we plead our heart's consuming pain | I |
At sight of ruined altars prophets slain | I |
And God's own ark with blood of souls defiled | L |
- | |
He on the rock may bid us stand and see | B |
The outskirts of His march of mystery | B |
His endless warfare with man's wilful heart | L |
First His great Power He to the sinner shows | B |
Lo at His angry blast the rocks unclose | B |
And to their base the trembling mountains part | L |
- | |
Yet the Lord is not here 'Tis not by Power | A |
He will be known but darker tempests lower | A |
Still sullen heavings vex the labouring ground | L |
Perhaps His Presence thro' all depth and height | L |
Best of all gems that deck His crown of light | L |
The haughty eye may dazzle and confound | L |
- | |
God is not in the earthquake but behold | L |
From Sinai's caves are bursting as of old | L |
The flames of His consuming jealous ire | G |
Woe to the sinner should stern Justice prove | M |
His chosen attribute but He in love | N |
Hastes to proclaim God is not in the fire | A |
- | |
The storm is o'er and hark a still small voice | B |
Steals on the ear to say Jehovah's choice | B |
Is ever with the soft meek tender soul | O |
By soft meek tender ways He loves to draw | P |
The sinner startled by His ways of awe | Q |
Here is our Lord and not where thunders roll | O |
- | |
Back then complainer loath thy life no more | R |
Nor deem thyself upon a desert shore | R |
Because the rocks the nearer prospect close | B |
Yet in fallen Israel are there hearts and eyes | B |
That day by day in prayer like thine arise | B |
Thou know'st them not but their Creator knows | B |
- | |
Go to the world return nor fear to cast | L |
Thy bread upon the waters sure at last | L |
In joy to find it after many days | B |
The work be thine the fruit thy children's part | L |
Choose to believe not see sight tempts the heart | L |
From sober walking in true Gospel ways | B |
