And after the earthquake a fireA
but the Lord was not in the fireA
and after the fire a still small voiceB
Kings xixB
-
-
In troublous days of anguish and rebukeC
While sadly round them Israel's children lookD
And their eyes fail for waiting on their LordE
While underneath each awful arch of greenF
On every mountain top God's chosen sceneF
Of pure heart worship Baal is adoredE
-
'Tis well true hearts should for a time retireG
To holy ground in quiet to aspireG
Towards promised regions of serener graceB
On Horeb with Elijah let us lieH
Where all around on mountain sand and skyH
God's chariot wheels have left distinctest traceB
-
There if in jealousy and strong disdainI
We to the sinner's God of sin complainI
Untimely seeking here the peace of HeavenJ
It is enough O Lord now let me dieH
E'en as my fathers did for what am IH
That I should stand where they have vainly strivenJ
-
Perhaps our God may of our conscience askK
What doest thou here frail wanderer from thy taskK
Where hast thou left those few sheep in the wildL
Then should we plead our heart's consuming painI
At sight of ruined altars prophets slainI
And God's own ark with blood of souls defiledL
-
He on the rock may bid us stand and seeB
The outskirts of His march of mysteryB
His endless warfare with man's wilful heartL
First His great Power He to the sinner showsB
Lo at His angry blast the rocks uncloseB
And to their base the trembling mountains partL
-
Yet the Lord is not here 'Tis not by PowerA
He will be known but darker tempests lowerA
Still sullen heavings vex the labouring groundL
Perhaps His Presence thro' all depth and heightL
Best of all gems that deck His crown of lightL
The haughty eye may dazzle and confoundL
-
God is not in the earthquake but beholdL
From Sinai's caves are bursting as of oldL
The flames of His consuming jealous ireG
Woe to the sinner should stern Justice proveM
His chosen attribute but He in loveN
Hastes to proclaim God is not in the fireA
-
The storm is o'er and hark a still small voiceB
Steals on the ear to say Jehovah's choiceB
Is ever with the soft meek tender soulO
By soft meek tender ways He loves to drawP
The sinner startled by His ways of aweQ
Here is our Lord and not where thunders rollO
-
Back then complainer loath thy life no moreR
Nor deem thyself upon a desert shoreR
Because the rocks the nearer prospect closeB
Yet in fallen Israel are there hearts and eyesB
That day by day in prayer like thine ariseB
Thou know'st them not but their Creator knowsB
-
Go to the world return nor fear to castL
Thy bread upon the waters sure at lastL
In joy to find it after many daysB
The work be thine the fruit thy children's partL
Choose to believe not see sight tempts the heartL
From sober walking in true Gospel waysB
