O God of Mercy God of MightA
How should pale sinners bear the sightA
If as Thy power in surely hereB
Thine open glory should appearC
-
For now Thy people are allowedD
To scale the mount and pierce the cloudD
And Faith may feed her eager viewE
With wonders Sinai never knewE
-
Fresh from th' atoning sacrificeF
The world's Creator bleeding liesG
That man His foe by whom He bledH
May take Him for his daily breadH
-
O agony of wavering thoughtI
When sinners first so near are broughtI
It is my Maker dare I stayJ
My Saviour dare I turn awayJ
-
Thus while the storm is high withinK
'Twixt love of Christ and fear of sinK
Who can express the soothing charmL
To feel Thy kind upholding armL
-
My mother Church and hear thee tellM
Of a world lost yet loved so wellM
That He by whom the angels liveN
His only Son for her would giveO
-
And doubt we yet Thou call'st againP
A lower still a sweeter strainQ
A voice from Mercy's inmost shrineR
This very breath of Love divineR
-
Whispering it says to each apartS
Come unto Me thou trembling heartS
And we must hope so sweet the toneT
The precious words are all our ownT
-
Hear them kind Saviour hear Thy SpouseU
Low at Thy feet renew her vowsV
Thine own dear promise she would pleadW
For us her true though fallen seedW
-
She pleads by all Thy mercies toldX
Thy chosen witnesses of oldX
Love's heralds sent to man forgivenY
One from the Cross and one from HeavenY
-
This of true penitents the chiefZ
To the lost spirit brings reliefZ
Lifting on high th' adored NameA2
Sinners to save Christ Jesus cameA2
-
That dearest of Thy bosom FriendsB2
Into the wavering heart descendsB2
What fallen again yet cheerful riseG
Thine Intercessor never diesG
-
The eye of Faith that waxes brightA
Each moment by thine altar's lightA
Sees them e'en now they still abideC2
In mystery kneeling at our sideC2
-
And with them every spirit blestD2
From realms of triumph or of restD2
From Him who saw creation's mornE2
Of all Thine angels eldest bornE2
-
To the poor babe who died to dayJ
Take part in our thanksgiving layJ
Watching the tearful joy and calmF2
While sinners taste Thine heavenly balmF2
-
Sweet awful hour the only soundG2
One gentle footstep gliding roundG2
Offering by turns on Jesus' partS
The Cross to every hand and heartS
-
Refresh us Lord to hold it fastH2
And when Thy veil is drawn at lastH2
Let us depart where shadows ceaseI2
With words of blessing and of peaceI2
