And Jesus answering said Were there not ten cleansed butA
where are the nine There are not found that returned toB
give glory to God save this stranger St Luke xviiC
-
-
Ten cleansed and only one remainD
Who would have thought our nature's stainD
Was dyed so foul so deep in grainD
E'en He who reads the heartE
Knows what He gave and what we lostF
Sin's forfeit and redemption's costG
By a short pang of wonder crossedF
Seems at the sight to startE
-
Yet 'twas not wonder but His loveC
Our wavering spirits would reproveC
That heavenward seem so free to moveC
When earth can yield no moreH
Then from afar on God we cryI
But should the mist of woe roll byI
Not showers across an April skyI
Drift when the storm is o'erJ
-
Faster than those false drops and fewC
Fleet from the heart a worthless dewC
What sadder scene can angels viewC
Than self deceiving tearsK
Poured idly over some dark pageL
Of earlier life though pride or rageL
The record of to day engageL
A woe for future yearsM
-
Spirits that round the sick man's bedN
Watched noting down each prayer he madeO
Were your unerring roll displayedO
His pride of health to abaseM
Or when soft showers in season fallP
Answering a famished nation's callP
Should unseen fingers on the wallP
Our vows forgotten traceM
-
How should we gaze in trance of fearQ
Yet shines the light as thrilling clearQ
From Heaven upon that scroll severeQ
Ten cleansed and one remainD
Nor surer would the blessing proveC
Of humbled hearts that own Thy loveC
Should choral welcome from aboveC
Visit our senses plainD
-
Than by Thy placid voice and browR
With healing first with comfort nowR
Turned upon him who hastes to bowR
Before Thee heart and kneeS
Oh thou who only wouldst be blestT
On thee alone My blessing restT
Rise go thy way in peace possessedT
For evermore of MeS
