And Simon answering said unto Him Master we have toiledA
all the night and have taken nothing nevertheless at ThyB
word I will let down the net And when they had this doneC
they inclosed a great multitude of fishes and their netD
brake St Luke vE
-
-
The livelong night we've toiled in vainF
But at Thy gracious wordG
I will let down the net againH
Do Thou Thy will O LordI
-
So spake the weary fisher spentJ
With bootless darkling toilK
Yet on his Master's bidding bentJ
For love and not for spoilK
-
So day by day and week by weekL
In sad and weary thoughtM
They muse whom God hath set to seekL
The souls His Christ hath boughtN
-
For not upon a tranquil lakeO
Our pleasant task we plyB
Where all along our glistening wakeO
The softest moonbeams lieB
-
Where rippling wave and dashing oarP
Our midnight chant attendQ
Or whispering palm leaves from the shoreP
With midnight silence blendQ
-
Sweet thoughts of peace ye may not lastR
Too soon some ruder soundS
Calls us from where ye soar so fastR
Back to our earthly roundS
-
For wildest storms our ocean sweepT
No anchor but the CrossU
Might hold and oft the thankless deepT
Turns all our toil to lossU
-
Full many a dreary anxious hourV
We watch our nets aloneW
In drenching spray and driving showerV
And hear the night bird's moanW
-
At morn we look and nought is thereX
Sad dawn of cheerless dayY
Who then from pining and despairX
The sickening heart can stayY
-
There is a stay and we are strongZ
Our Master is at handA2
To cheer our solitary songZ
And guide us to the strandA2
-
In His own time but yet a whileB2
Our bark at sea must rideC2
Cast after cast by force or guileB2
All waters must be triedC2
-
By blameless guile or gentle forceD2
As when He deigned to teachE2
The lode star of our Christian courseD2
Upon this sacred beachE2
-
Should e'er thy wonder working graceF2
Triumph by our weak armG2
Let not our sinful fancy traceF2
Aught human in the charmG2
-
To our own nets ne'er bow we downH2
Lest on the eternal shoreP
The angels while oar draught they ownW
Reject us evermoreP
-
Or if for our unworthinessF2
Toil prayer and watching failI2
In disappointment Thou canst blessF2
So love at heart prevailI2
