And the Lord was very angry with Aaron to have destroyedA
him and I prayed for Aaron also the same timeB
Deuteronomy ixC
-
-
Now is there solemn pause in earth and heavenD
The Conqueror nowE
His bonds hath rivenD
And Angels wonder why He stays belowF
Yet hath not man his lesson learnedG
How endless love should be returnedG
-
Deep is the silence as of summer noonH
When a soft showerI
Will trickle soonH
A gracious rain freshening the weary bowerI
O sweetly then far off is heardJ
The clear note of some lonely birdJ
-
So let Thy turtle dove's sad call ariseC
In doubt and fearK
Through darkening skiesC
And pierce O Lord Thy justly sealed earL
Where on the house top all night longM
She trills her widowed faltering songM
-
Teach her to know and love her hour of prayerN
And evermoreO
As faith grows rareN
Unlock her heart and offer all its storeO
In holier love and humbler vowsC
As suits a lost returning spouseC
-
Not as at first but with intenser cryP
Upon the mountQ
She now must lieP
Till Thy dear love to blot the sad accountQ
Of her rebellious race be wonD
Pitying the mother in the sonD
-
But chiefly for she knows Thee angered worstR
By holiest thingsC
Profaned and curstR
Chiefly for Aaron's seed she spreads her wingsC
If but one leaf she may from TheeS
Win of the reconciling treeS
-
For what shall heal when holy water banesC
Or who may guideR
O'er desert plainsC
Thy loved yet sinful people wandering wideR
If Aaron's hand unshrinking mouldR
An idol form of earthly goldR
-
Therefore her tears are bitter and as deepT
Her boding sighP
As while men sleepT
Sad hearted mothers heave that wakeful lieP
To muse upon some darling childR
Roaming in youth's uncertain wildR
-
Therefore on fearful dreams her inward sightR
Is fain to dwellU
What lurid lightR
Shall the last darkness of the world dispelU
The Mediator in His wrathV
Descending down the lightning's pathV
-
Yet yet awhile offended Saviour pauseC
In act to breakW
Thine outraged lawsC
O spare Thy rebels for Thine own dear sakeW
Withdraw Thine hand nor dash to earthX
The covenant of our second birthX
-
'Tis forfeit like the first we own it allY
Yet for love's sakeW
Let it not fallY
But at Thy touch let veiled hearts awakeW
That nearest to Thine altar lieP
Yet least of holy things descryS
-
Teacher of teachers Priest of priests from TheeS
The sweet strong prayerS
Must rise to freeS
First Levi then all Israel from the snareS
Thou art our Moses out of sightR
Speak for us or we perish quiteR
