Abide with us for it is toward evening and the day is farA
spent St Luke xxivB
-
-
'Tis gone that bright and orbed blazeC
Fast fading from our wistful gazeC
You mantling cloud has hid from sightD
The last faint pulse of quivering lightD
-
In darkness and in wearinessE
The traveller on his way must pressF
No gleam to watch on tree or towerG
Whiling away the lonesome hourG
-
Sun of my soul Thou Saviour dearH
It is not night if Thou be nearH
Oh may no earth born cloud ariseI
To hide Thee from Thy servant's eyesI
-
When round Thy wondrous works belowJ
My searching rapturous glance I throwJ
Tracing out Wisdom Power and LoveB
In earth or sky in stream or groveB
-
Or by the light Thy words discloseK
Watch Time's full river as it flowsK
Scanning Thy gracious ProvidenceL
Where not too deep for mortal senseM
-
When with dear friends sweet talk I holdN
And all the flowers of life unfoldN
Let not my heart within me burnO
Except in all I Thee discernO
-
When the soft dews of kindly sleepP
My wearied eyelids gently steepP
Be my last thought how sweet to restQ
For ever on my Saviour's breastQ
-
Abide with me from morn till eveB
For without Thee I cannot liveB
Abide with me when night is nighB
For without Thee I dare not dieB
-
Thou Framer of the light and darkR
Steer through the tempest Thine own arkR
Amid the howling wintry seaS
We are in port if we have TheeS
-
The Rulers of this Christian landT
'Twixt Thee and us ordained to standT
Guide Thou their course O Lord arightT
Let all do all as in Thy sightT
-
Oh by Thine own sad burthen borneU
So meekly up the hill of scornU
Teach Thou Thy Priests their daily crossV
To bear as Thine nor count it lossV
-
If some poor wandering child of ThineW
Have spurned to day the voice divineW
Now Lord the gracious work beginX
Let him no more lie down in sinX
-
Watch by the sick enrich the poorY
With blessings from Thy boundless storeZ
Be every mourner's sleep to nightT
Like infants' slumbers pure and lightT
-
Come near and bless us when we wakeA2
Ere through the world our way we takeA2
Till in the ocean of Thy loveB
We lose ourselves in Heaven aboveB
