As for thee also by the blood of thy covenant I have sentA
forth thy prisoners out of the pit wherein is no waterB
Zechariah ixC
-
-
At length the worst is o'er and Thou art laidD
Deep in Thy darksome bedE
All still and cold beneath yon dreary stoneF
Thy sacred form is goneG
Around those lips where power and mercy hungH
The dews of deaths have clungH
The dull earth o'er Thee and Thy foes aroundI
Thou sleep'st a silent corse in funeral fetters woundI
-
Sleep'st Thou indeed or is Thy spirit fledE
At large among the deadE
Whether in Eden bowers Thy welcome voiceC
Wake Abraham to rejoiceC
Or in some drearier scene Thine eye controlsC
The thronging band of soulsC
That as Thy blood won earth Thine agonyJ
Might set the shadowy realm from sin and sorrow freeJ
-
Where'er Thou roam'st one happy soul we knowK
Seen at Thy side in woeK
Waits on Thy triumphs even as all the blestL
With him and Thee shall restL
Each on his cross by Thee we hang a whileM
Watching Thy patient smileM
Till we have learned to say 'Tis justly doneN
Only in glory LORD Thy sinful servant ownF
-
Soon wilt Thou take us to Thy tranquil bowerB
To rest one little hourB
Till Thine elect are numbered and the graveO
Call Thee to come and saveO
Then on Thy bosom borne shall we descendP
Again with earth to blendP
Earth all refined with bright supernal firesC
Tinctured with holy blood and winged with pure desiresC
-
Meanwhile with every son and saint of ThineQ
Along the glorious lineQ
Sitting by turns beneath Thy sacred feetR
We'll hold communion sweetR
Know them by look and voice and thank them allS
For helping us in thrallS
For words of hope and bright examples givenN
To show through moonless skies that there is light in HeavenN
-
O come that day when in this restless heartT
Earth shall resign her partT
When in the grave with Thee my limbs shall restL
My soul with Thee be blestL
But stay presumptuous CHRIST with Thee abidesC
In the rock's dreary sidesC
He from this stone will wring Celestial dewU
If but this prisoner's heart he faithful found and trueU
-
When tears are spent and then art left aloneF
With ghosts of blessings goneG
Think thou art taken from the cross and laidD
In JESUS' burial shadeD
Take Moses' rod the rod of prayer and callS
Out of the rocky wallS
The fount of holy blood and lift on highV
Thy grovelling soul that feels so desolate and dryV
-
Prisoner of Hope thou art look up and singW
In hope of promised springW
As in the pit his father's darling layX
Beside the desert wayX
And knew not how but knew his GOD would saveO
E'en from that living graveO
So buried with our LORD we'll chose our eyesC
To the decaying world till Angels bid us riseC
