And as they were afraid and bowed down their faces to theA
earth they said unto them Why seek ye the living among theA
dead He is not here but is risen St Luke xxivB
-
-
Oh day of days shall hearts set freeC
No minstrel rapture find for theeC
Thou art this Sun of other daysD
They shine by giving back thy raysD
-
Enthroned in thy sovereign sphereE
Thou shedd'st thy light on all the yearE
Sundays by thee more glorious breakF
An Easter Day in every weekG
-
And week days following in their trainH
The fulness of thy blessing gainH
Till all both resting soil employI
Be one Lord's day of holy joyI
-
Then wake my soul to high desiresJ
And earlier light thine altar firesJ
The World some hours is on her wayK
Nor thinks on thee thou blessed dayK
-
Or if she think it is in scornL
The vernal light of Easter mornL
To her dark gaze no brighter seemsM
Than Reason's or the Law's pale beamsM
-
Where is your Lord she scornful asksN
Where is His hire we know his tasksN
Sons of a King ye boast to beC
Let us your crowns and treasures seeC
-
We in the words of Truth replyO
An angel brought them from this skyO
Our crown our treasure is not hereP
'Tis stored above the highest sphereE
-
Methinks your wisdom guides amissQ
To seek on earth a Christian's blissQ
We watch not now the lifeless stoneR
Our only Lord is risen and goneS
-
Yet e'en the lifeless stone is dearE
For thoughts of Him who late lay hereP
And the base world now Christ hath diedT
Ennobled is and glorifiedT
-
No more a charnel house to fenceU
The relics of lost innocenceV
A vault of ruin and decayK
Th' imprisoning stone is rolled awayK
-
'Tis now a cell where angels useW
To come and go with heavenly newsX
And in the ears of mourners sayK
Come see the place where Jesus layK
-
'Tis now a fane where Love can findY
Christ everywhere embalmed and shinedY
Aye gathering up memorials sweetZ
Where'er she sets her duteous feetZ
-
Oh joy to Mary first allowedA2
When roused from weeping o'er His shroudA2
By His own calm soul soothing toneR
Breathing her name as still His ownR
-
Joy to the faithful Three renewedB2
As their glad errand they pursuedB2
Happy who so Christ's word conveyK
That he may meet them on their wayK
-
So is it still to holy tearsC2
In lonely hours Christ risen appearsD2
In social hours who Christ would seeC
Must turn all tasks to CharityC
