Dedication Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAC DEFE GHGH IJIJ KJKC LMLM CGCGWhen in my silent solitary walk | A |
I sought a strain not all unworthy Thee | B |
My heart still ringing with wild worldly talk | A |
Gave forth no note of holier minstrelsy | C |
- | |
Prayer is the secret to myself I said | D |
Strong supplication must call down the charm | E |
And thus with untuned heart I feebly prayed | F |
Knocking at Heaven's gate with earth palsied arm | E |
- | |
Fountain of Harmony Thou Spirit blest | G |
By whom the troubled waves of earthly sound | H |
Are gathered into order such as best | G |
Some high souled bard in his enchanted round | H |
- | |
May compass Power divine Oh spread Thy wing | I |
Thy dovelike wing that makes confusion fly | J |
Over my dark void spirit summoning | I |
New worlds of music strains that may not die | J |
- | |
Oh happiest who before thine altar wait | K |
With pure hands ever holding up on high | J |
The guiding Star of all who seek Thy gate | K |
The undying lamp of heavenly Poesy | C |
- | |
Too weak too wavering for such holy task | L |
Is my frail arm O Lord but I would fain | M |
Track to its source the brightness I would bask | L |
In the clear ray that makes Thy pathway plain | M |
- | |
I dare not hope with David's harp to chase | C |
The evil spirit from the troubled breast | G |
Enough for me if I can find such grace | C |
To listen to the strain and be at rest | G |
