Dedication Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAC DEFE GHGH IJIJ KJKC LMLM CGCG

When in my silent solitary walkA
I sought a strain not all unworthy TheeB
My heart still ringing with wild worldly talkA
Gave forth no note of holier minstrelsyC
-
Prayer is the secret to myself I saidD
Strong supplication must call down the charmE
And thus with untuned heart I feebly prayedF
Knocking at Heaven's gate with earth palsied armE
-
Fountain of Harmony Thou Spirit blestG
By whom the troubled waves of earthly soundH
Are gathered into order such as bestG
Some high souled bard in his enchanted roundH
-
May compass Power divine Oh spread Thy wingI
Thy dovelike wing that makes confusion flyJ
Over my dark void spirit summoningI
New worlds of music strains that may not dieJ
-
Oh happiest who before thine altar waitK
With pure hands ever holding up on highJ
The guiding Star of all who seek Thy gateK
The undying lamp of heavenly PoesyC
-
Too weak too wavering for such holy taskL
Is my frail arm O Lord but I would fainM
Track to its source the brightness I would baskL
In the clear ray that makes Thy pathway plainM
-
I dare not hope with David's harp to chaseC
The evil spirit from the troubled breastG
Enough for me if I can find such graceC
To listen to the strain and be at restG
