Confirmation Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB ACAC DEDE FGFG AHAH AAAA IJIK HAHA ILIL AAAA

The shadow of th' Almighty's cloudA
Calm on this tents of Israel layB
While drooping paused twelve banners proudA
Till He arise and lead this wayB
-
Then to the desert breeze unrolledA
Cheerly the waving pennons flyC
Lion or eagle each bright foldA
A lodestar to a warrior's eyeC
-
So should Thy champions ere this strifeD
By holy hands o'ershadowed kneelE
So fearless for their charmed lifeD
Bear to this end Thy Spirit's sealE
-
Steady and pure as stars that beamF
In middle heaven all mist aboveG
Seen deepest in this frozen streamF
Such is their high courageous loveG
-
And soft as pure and warm as brightA
They brood upon life's peaceful hourH
As if the Dove that guides their flightA
Shook from her plumes a downy showerH
-
Spirit of might and sweetness tooA
Now leading on the wars of GodA
Now to green isles of shade and dewA
Turning the waste Thy people trodA
-
Draw Holy Ghost Thy seven fold veilI
Between us and the fires of youthJ
Breathe Holy Ghost Thy freshening galeI
Our fevered brow in age to sootheK
-
And oft as sin and sorrow tireH
This hallowed hour do Thou renewA
When beckoned up the awful choirH
By pastoral hands toward Thee we drewA
-
When trembling at this sacred railI
We hid our eyes and held our breathL
Felt Thee how strong our hearts how frailI
And longed to own Thee to the deathL
-
For ever on our souls be tracedA
That blessing dear that dove like handA
A sheltering rock in Memory's wasteA
O'er shadowing all the weary landA
