And suddenly there was with the Angel a multitude of theA
heavenly host praising God St Luke iiB
-
-
What sudden blaze of songC
Spreads o'er th' expanse of HeavenD
In waves of light it thrills alongC
Th' angelic signal givenD
Glory to God from yonder central fireE
Flows out the echoing lay beyond the starry choirE
-
Like circles widening roundF
Upon a clear blue riverE
Orb after orb the wondrous soundF
Is echoed on for everE
Glory to God on high on earth be peaceG
And love towards men of love salvation and releaseG
-
Yet stay before thou dareH
To join that festal throngC
Listen and mark what gentle airH
First stirred the tide of songC
'Tis not the Saviour born in David's homeI
To Whom for power and health obedient worlds should comeJ
-
'Tis not the Christ the LordK
With fixed adoring lookL
The choir of Angels caught the wordM
Nor yet their silence brokeN
But when they heard the sign where Christ should beO
In sudden light they shone and heavenly harmonyO
-
Wrapped in His swaddling bandsP
And in His manger laidQ
The Hope and Glory of all landsP
Is come to the world's aidQ
No peaceful home upon his cradle smiledR
Guests rudely went and came where slept the royal ChildR
-
But where Thou dwellest LordK
No other thought should beO
Once duly welcomed and adoredK
How should I part with TheeO
Bethlehem must lose Thee soon but Thou wilt graceS
The single heart to be Thy sure abiding placeS
-
Thee on the bosom laidQ
Of a pure virgin mindT
In quiet ever and in shadeQ
Shepherd and sage may findT
They who have bowed untaught to Nature's swayU
And they who follow Truth along her star paved wayU
-
The pastoral spirits firstV
Approach Thee Babe divineW
For they in lowly thoughts are nursedV
Meet for Thy lowly shrineW
Sooner than they should miss where Thou dost dwellX
Angela from Heaven will stoop to guide them to Thy cellX
-
Still as the day comes roundF
For Thee to be revealedY
By wakeful shepherds Thou art foundF
Abiding in the fieldY
All through the wintry heaven and chill night airH
In music and in light Thou dawnest on their prayerH
-
O faint not ye for fearZ
What though your wandering sheepA2
Reckless of what they see and hearB2
Lie lost in wilful sleepA2
High Heaven in mercy to your sad annoyC2
Still greets you with glad tidings of immortal joyC2
-
Think on th' eternal homeI
The Saviour left for youD2
Think on the Lord most holy comeJ
To dwell with hearts untrueD2
So shall ye tread untired His pastoral waysE2
And in the darkness sing your carol of high praiseE2
