And when the Lord saw her He had compassion on her and said untoA
her Weep not And He came and touched the bier and they thatB
bare him stood still And He said Young man I say unto theeC
Arise St Luke viiD
-
Who says the wan autumnal soonE
Beams with too faint a smileF
To light up nature's face againG
And though the year be on this waneH
With thoughts of spring the heart beguileF
-
Waft him thou soft September breezeI
And gently lay him downJ
Within some circling woodland wallK
Where bright leaves reddening ere they fallK
Wave gaily o'er the waters brownJ
-
And let some graceful arch be thereL
With wreathed mullions proudM
With burnished ivy for its screenN
And moss that glows as fresh and greenN
As thought beneath an April cloudM
-
Who says the widow's heart must breakO
The childless mother sinkP
A kinder truer voice I hearQ
Which e'en beside that mournful bierQ
Whence parents' eyes would hopeless shrinkP
-
Bids weep no more O heart bereftR
How strange to thee that soundS
A widow o'er her only sonT
Feeling more bitterly aloneU
For friends that press officious roundS
-
Yet is the voice of comfort heardV
For Christ hath touched the bierQ
The bearers wait with wondering eyeW
The swelling bosom dares not sighW
But all is still 'twixt hope and fearX
-
E'en such an awful soothing calmY
We sometimes see alightZ
On Christian mourners while they waitA2
In silence by some churchyard gateA2
Their summons to this holy riteZ
-
And such the tones of love which breakO
The stillness of that hourB2
Quelling th' embittered spirit's strifeD
The Resurrection and the LifeD
Am I believe and die no moreC2
-
Unchanged that voice and though not yetD2
The dead sit up and speakE2
Answering its call we gladlier restF2
Our darlings on earth's quiet breastF2
And our hearts feel they must not breakO
-
Far better they should sleep awhileF
Within the Church's shadeG2
Nor wake until new heaven new earthH2
Meet for their new immortal birthH2
For their abiding place be madeG2
-
Than wander back to life and leanN
On our frail love once moreC2
'Tis sweet as year by year we loseI2
Friends out of sight in faith to museI2
How grows in Paradise our storeC2
-
Then pass ye mourners cheerly onJ2
Through prayer unto the tombK2
Still as ye watch life's falling leafD
Gathering from every loss and griefD
Hope of new spring and endless homeL2
-
Then cheerly to your work againG
With hearts new braced and setD2
To run untired love's blessed raceM2
As meet for those who face to faceM2
Over the grave their Lord have metD2
