When thou fastest anoint thine head and wash thy faceA
that thou appear not unto men to fast but unto thy FatherB
which is in secret St Matthew viC
-
-
Yes deep within and deeper yetD
The rankling shaft of conscience hideE
Quick let the swelling eye forgetD
The tears that in the heart abideE
Calm be the voice the aspect boldF
No shuddering pass o'er lip or browG
For why should Innocence be toldF
The pangs that guilty spirits bowG
-
The loving eye that watches thineH
Close as the air that wraps thee roundI
Why in thy sorrow should it pineH
Since never of thy sin it foundI
And wherefore should the heathen seeJ
What chains of darkness thee enslaveK
And mocking say 'Lo this is heJ
Who owned a God that could not save'K
-
Thus oft the mourner's wayward heartL
Tempts him to hide his grief and dieC
Too feeble for Confession's smartL
Too proud to bear a pitying eyeC
How sweet in that dark hour to fallM
On bosoms waiting to receiveK
Our sighs and gently whisper allM
They love us will not God forgiveK
-
Else let us keep our fast withinN
Till Heaven and we are quite aloneO
Then let the grief the shame the sinN
Before the mercy seat be thrownO
Between the porch and altar weepP
Unworthy of the holiest placeA
Yet hoping near the shrine to keepP
One lowly cell in sight of graceA
-
Nor fear lest sympathy should failQ
Hast thou not seen in night hours drearG
When racking thoughts the heart assailQ
The glimmering stars by turns appearG
And from the eternal house aboveK
With silent news of mercy stealR
So Angels pause on tasks of loveK
To look where sorrowing sinners kneelR
-
Or if no Angel pass that wayS
He who in secret sees perchanceT
May bid His own heart warming rayS
Toward thee stream with kindlier glanceT
As when upon His drooping headU
His Father's light was poured from HeavenV
What time unsheltered and unfedU
Far in the wild His steps were drivenV
-
High thoughts were with Him in that hourG
Untold unspeakable on earthW
And who can stay the soaring powerG
Of spirits weaned from worldly mirthW
While far beyond the sound of praiseX
With upward eye they float sereneY
And learn to bear their Saviour's blazeX
When Judgment shall undraw the screenY
