In the whole wide world there was but oneA
Others for others but she was mineB
The one fair woman beneath the sunA
-
From her gold flax curls' most marvellous shineB
Down to the lithe and delicate feetC
There was not a curve nor a waving lineB
-
But moved in a harmony firm and sweetC
With all of passion my life could knowD
By knowledge perfect and faith completeC
-
I was bound to her as the planets goD
Adoring around their central starE
Free but united for weal or woeD
-
She was so near and Heaven so farE
She grew my heaven and law and fateF
Rounding my life with a mystic barE
-
No thought beyond could violateF
Our love to fulness in silence nursedG
Grew calm as morning when through the gateF
-
Of the glimmering East the sun has burstG
With his hot life filling the waiting airH
She kissed me once that last and firstG
-
Of her maiden kisses was placid as prayerH
Against all comers I sat with lanceI
In rest and drunk with my joy I swareH
-
Defiance and scorn to the world's worst chanceI
In vain for soon unhorsed I layJ
At the feet of the strong god CircumstanceI
-
And never again shall break the dayJ
And never again shall fall the nightK
That shall light me or shield me on my wayJ
-
To the presence of my sad soul's delightK
Her dead love comes like a passionate ghostL
To mourn the Body it held so lightK
-
And Fate like a hound with a purpose lostM
Goes round bewildered with shame and frightK
