To Peter by night the faithfullest cameA
And said We appeal to theeB
The life of the Church is in thy lifeC
We pray thee to rise and fleeB
-
For the tyrant's hand is red with bloodD
And his arm is heavy with powerE
Thy head the head of the Church will fallF
If thou tarry in Rome an hourE
-
Through the sleeping town St Peter passedG
To the wide Campagna plainH
In the starry light of the Alban nightI
He drew free breath againJ
-
When across his path an awful formK
In luminous glory stoodL
His thorn crowned brow His hands and feetM
Were wet with immortal bloodD
-
The godlike sorrow which filled His eyesN
Seemed changed to a godlike wrathO
As they turned on Peter who cried aloudP
And sank to his knees in the pathO
-
Lord of my life my love my soulQ
Say what wilt Thou with meB
A voice replied I go to RomeR
To be crucified for theeB
-
The apostle sprang all flushed to his feetM
The vision had passed awayS
The light still lay on the dewy plainH
But the sky in the east was grayS
-
To the city walls St Peter turnedT
And his heart in his breast grew fireE
In every vein the hot blood burnedT
With the strength of one high desireE
-
And sturdily back he marched to his deathU
Of terrible pain and shameA
And never a shade of fear againJ
To the stout apostle cameA
