The Prayer Of The Romans Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFE GEHEEIEI JEKEKKLK KKMKKNKN KOEOPQEQ

Not done but near its endingA
Is the work that our eyes desiredB
Not yet fulfilled but near the goalC
Is the hope that our worn hearts firedB
And on the Alban MountainsD
Where the blushes of dawn increaseE
We see the flash of the beautiful feetF
Of Freedom and of PeaceE
-
How long were our fond dreams baffledG
Novara's sad mischanceE
The Kaiser's sword and fetter lockH
And the traitor stab of FranceE
Till at last came glorious VeniceE
In storm and tempest homeI
And now God maddens the greedy kingsE
And gives to her people RomeI
-
Lame Lion of CapreraJ
Red shirts of the lost campaignsE
Not idly shed was the costly bloodK
You poured from generous veinsE
For the shame of AspromonteK
And the stain of Mentana's sodK
But forged the curse of kings that sprangL
From your breaking hearts to GodK
-
We lift our souls to thee O LordK
Of Liberty and of LightK
Let not earth's kings pollute the workM
That was done in their despiteK
Let not thy light be darkenedK
In the shade of a sordid crownN
Nor pampered swine devour the fruitK
Thou shook'st with an earthquake downN
-
Let the People come to their birthrightK
And crosier and crown pass awayO
Like phantasms that flit o'er the marshesE
At the glance of the clean white dayO
And then from the lava of AetnaP
To the ice of the Alps let there beQ
One freedom one faith without fettersE
One republic in Italy freeQ
