In the dream of the Northern poetsA
The brave who in battle dieB
Fight on in shadowy phalanxC
In the field of the upper skyB
And as we read the sounding rhymeD
The reverent fancy hearsE
The ghostly ring of the viewless swordsF
And the clash of the spectral spearsG
-
We think with imperious questioningsH
Of the brothers whom we have lostI
And we strive to track in death's mysteryJ
The flight of each valiant ghostK
The Northern myth comes back to usL
And we feel through our sorrow's nightM
That those young souls are striving stillN
Somewhere for the truth and lightM
-
It was not their time for rest and sleepO
Their hearts beat high and strongP
In their fresh veins the blood of youthQ
Was singing its hot sweet songP
The open heaven bent over themR
Mid flowers their lithe feet trodS
Their lives lay vivid in light and blestT
By the smiles of women and GodS
-
Again they come Again I hearU
The tread of that goodly bandV
I know the flash of Ellsworth's eyeB
And the grasp of his hard warm handV
And Putnam and Shaw of the lion heartW
And an eye like a Boston girl'sX
And I see the light of heaven which layY
On Ulric Dahlgren's curlsX
-
There is no power in the gloom of hellZ
To quench those spirits' fireA2
There is no power in the bliss of heavenB2
To bid them not aspireC2
But somewhere in the eternal planD2
That strength that life surviveE2
And like the files on Lookout's crestT
Above death's clouds they striveE2
-
A chosen corps they are marching onF2
In a wider field than oursG2
Those bright battalions still fulfillN
The scheme of the heavenly powersG2
And high brave thoughts float down to usL
The echoes of that far fightM
Like the flash of a distant picket's gunB2
Through the shades of the severing nightM
-
No fear for them In our lower fieldH2
Let us keep our arms unstainedI2
That at last we be worthy to stand with themR
On the shining heights they've gainedI2
We shall meet and greet in closing ranksC
In Time's declining sunB2
When the bugles of God shall sound recallJ2
And the battle of life be wonB2
