L M CA
We sat together last May day and talkedB
Of the dear friends who walkedB
Beside us sharers of the hopes and fearsC
Of five and forty yearsC
-
Since first we met in Freedom's hope forlornD
And heard her battle hornD
Sound through the valleys of the sleeping NorthE
Calling her children forthE
-
And youth pressed forward with hope lighted eyesF
And age with forecast wiseF
Of the long strife before the triumph wonG
Girded his armor onH
-
Sadly ass name by name we called the rollI
We heard the dead bells tollI
For the unanswering many and we knewJ
The living were the fewJ
-
And we who waited our own call beforeK
The inevitable doorK
Listened and looked as all have done to winL
Some token from withinL
-
No sign we saw we heard no voices callM
The impenetrable wallM
Cast down its shadow like an awful doubtN
On all who sat withoutN
-
Of many a hint of life beyond the veilO
And many a ghostly taleO
Wherewith the ages spanned the gulf betweenP
The seen and the unseenP
-
Seeking from omen trance and dream to gainQ
Solace to doubtful painQ
And touch with groping hands the garment hemR
Of truth sufficing themR
-
We talked and turning from the sore unrestS
Of an all baffling questS
We thought of holy lives that from us passedT
Hopeful unto the lastT
-
As if they saw beyond the river of deathU
Like Him of NazarethV
The many mansions of the Eternal daysW
Lift up their gates of praiseW
-
And hushed to silence by a reverent aweX
Methought O friend I sawY
In thy true life of word and work and thoughtZ
The proof of all we soughtZ
-
Did we not witness in the life of theeA
Immortal prophecyA
And feel when with thee that thy footsteps trodA2
An everlasting roadB2
-
Not for brief days thy generous sympathiesC2
Thy scorn of selfish easeC2
Not for the poor prize of an earthly goalI
Thy strong uplift of soulI
-
Than thine was never turned a fonder heartD2
To nature and to artD2
In fair formed Hellas in her golden primeE2
Thy Philothea's timeE2
-
Yet loving beauty thou couldst pass it byF2
And for the poor denyF2
Thyself and see thy fresh sweet flower of fameG2
Wither in blight and blameG2
-
Sharing His love who holds in His embraceH2
The lowliest of our raceH2
Sure the Divine economy must beA
Conservative of theeA
-
For truth must live with truth self sacrificeI2
Seek out its great alliesF
Good must find good by gravitation sureJ2
And love with love endureJ2
-
And so since thou hast passed within the gateK2
Whereby awhile I waitK2
I give blind grief and blinder sense the lieF2
Thou hast not lived to dieF2
