Wilson Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCCB DEFGGF HHIJJI GGKLLK MMNOPN QQRGGR SSTGGT

The lowliest born of all the landA
He wrung from Fate's reluctant handA
The gifts which happier boyhood claimsB
And tasting on a thankless soilC
The bitter bread of unpaid toilC
He fed his soul with noble aimsB
-
And Nature kindly providentD
To him the future's promise lentE
The powers that shape man's destiniesF
Patience and faith and toil he knewG
The close horizon round him grewG
Broad with great possibilitiesF
-
By the low hearth fire's fitful blazeH
He read of old heroic daysH
The sage's thought the patriot's speechI
Unhelped alone himself he taughtJ
His school the craft at which he wroughtJ
His lore the book within his reachI
-
He felt his country's need he knewG
The work her children had to doG
And when at last he heard the callK
In her behalf to serve and dareL
Beside his senatorial chairL
He stood the unquestioned peer of allK
-
Beyond the accident of birthM
He proved his simple manhood's worthM
Ancestral pride and classic graceN
Confessed the large brained artisanO
So clear of sight so wise in planP
And counsel equal to his placeN
-
With glance intuitive he sawQ
Through all disguise of form and lawQ
And read men like an open bookR
Fearless and firm he never quailedG
Nor turned aside for threats nor failedG
To do the thing he undertookR
-
How wise how brave he was how wellS
He bore himself let history tellS
While waves our flag o'er land and seaT
No black thread in its warp or weftG
He found dissevered States he leftG
A grateful Nation strong and freeT
