The shadows grow and deepen round meA
I feel the deffall in the airB
The muezzin of the darkening thicketC
I hear the night thrush call to prayerB
-
The evening wind is sad with farewellsD
And loving hands unclasp from mineE
Alone I go to meet the darknessF
Across an awful boundary lineE
-
As from the lighted hearths behind meA
I pass with slow reluctant feetG
What waits me in the land of strangenessF
What face shall smile what voice shall greetG
-
What space shall awe what brightness blind meA
What thunder roll of music stunH
What vast processions sweep before meA
Of shapes unknown beneath the sunH
-
I shrink from unaccustomed gloryA
I dread the myriad voiced strainI
Give me the unforgotten facesJ
And let my lost ones speak againK
-
He will not chide my mortal yearningL
Who is our Brother and our FriendM
In whose full life divine and humanH
The heavenly and the earthly blendM
-
Mine be the joy of soul communionH
The sense of spiritual strength renewedN
The reverence for the pure and holyA
The dear delight of doing goodO
-
No fitting ear is mine to listenH
An endless anthem's rise and fallP
No curious eye is mine to measureQ
The pearl gate and the jasper wallP
-
For love must needs be more than knowledgeR
What matter if I never knowS
Why Aldebaran's star is ruddyA
Or warmer Sirius white as snowS
-
Forgive my human words O FatherQ
I go Thy larger truth to proveT
Thy mercy shall transcend my longingL
I seek but love and Thou art LoveU
-
I go to find my lost and mourned forV
Safe in Thy sheltering goodness stillW
And all that hope and faith foreshadowS
Made perfect in Thy holy willW
