GONE to thy Heavenly Father's restA
The flowers of Eden round thee blowingB
And on thine ear the murmurs blestA
Of Siloa's waters softly flowingB
Beneath that Tree of Life which givesC
To all the earth its healing leavesD
In the white robe of angels cladE
And wandering by that sacred riverF
Whose streams of holiness make gladE
The city of our God foreverF
Gentlest of spirits not for theeG
Our tears are shed our sighs are givenH
Why mourn to know thou art a freeG
Partaker of the joys of heavenH
Finished thy work and kept thy faithI
In Christian firmness unto deathJ
And beautiful as sky and earthK
When autumn's sun is downward goingB
The blessed memory of thy worthK
Around thy place of slumber glowingB
But woe for us who linger stillL
With feebler strength and hearts less lowlyG
And minds less steadfast to the willL
Of Him whose every work is holyG
For not like thine is crucifiedM
The spirit of our human prideM
And at the bondman's tale of woeN
And for the outcast and forsakenH
Not warm like thine but cold and slowN
Our weaker sympathies awakenH
Darkly upon our struggling wayO
The storm of human hate is sweepingB
Hunted and branded and a preyO
Our watch amidst the darkness keepingB
Oh for that hidden strength which canP
Nerve unto death the inner manP
Oh for thy spirit tried and trueQ
And constant in the hour of trialR
Prepared to suffer or to doQ
In meekness and in self denialR
Oh for that spirit meek and mildS
Derided spurned yet uncomplainingB
By man deserted and reviledS
Yet faithful to its trust remainingB
Still prompt and resolute to saveT
From scourge and chain the hunted slaveT
Unwavering in the Truth's defenceU
Even where the fires of Hate were burningB
The unquailing eye of innocenceV
Alone upon the oppressor turningB
O loved of thousands to thy graveT
Sorrowing of heart thy brethren bore theeG
The poor man and the rescued slaveT
Wept as the broken earth closed o'er theeG
And grateful tears like summer rainW
Quickened its dying grass againX
And there as to some pilgrim shrineY
Shall come the outcast and the lowlyG
Of gentle deeds and words of thineY
Recalling memories sweet and holyG
Oh for the death the righteous dieZ
An end like autumn's day decliningB
On human hearts as on the skyZ
With holier tenderer beauty shiningB
As to the parting soul were givenH
The radiance of an opening heavenH
As if that pure and blessed lightA2
From off the Eternal altar flowingB
Were bathing in its upward flightA2
The spirit to its worship goingB
