Thou hast fallen in thine armorA
Thou martyr of the LordB
With thy last breath crying 'Onward 'C
And thy hand upon the swordB
The haughty heart deridethD
And the sinful lip revilesE
But the blessing of the perishingF
Around thy pillow smilesE
-
When to our cup of tremblingF
The added drop is givenG
And the long suspended thunderA
Falls terribly from HeavenG
When a new and fearful freedomH
Is proffered of the LordB
To the slow consuming FamineG
The Pestilence and SwordB
-
When the refuges of FalsehoodI
Shall be swept away in wrathD
And the temple shall be shakenG
With its idol to the earthD
Shall not thy words of warningF
Be all remembered thenJ
And thy now unheeded messageK
Burn in the hearts of menJ
-
Oppression's hand may scatterA
Its nettles on thy tombL
And even Christian bosomsE
Deny thy memory roomL
For lying lips shall tortureA
Thy mercy into crimeM
And the slanderer shall flourishN
As the bay tree for a timeM
-
But where the south wind lingersE
On Carolina's pinesE
Or falls the careless sunbeamO
Down Georgia's golden minesE
Where now beneath his burthenJ
The toiling slave is drivenJ
Where now a tyrant's mockeryP
Is offered unto HeavenJ
-
Where Mammon hath its altarsE
Wet o'er with human bloodQ
And pride and lust debasesE
The workmanship of GodR
There shall thy praise be spokenJ
Redeemed from Falsehood's banJ
When the fetters shall be brokenJ
And the slave shall be a manJ
-
Joy to thy spirit brotherA
A thousand hearts are warmS
A thousand kindred bosomsE
Are baring to the stormS
What though red handed ViolenceE
With secret Fraud combineJ
The wall of fire is round usE
Our Present Help was thineJ
-
Lo the waking up of nationsE
From Slavery's fatal sleepT
The murmur of a UniverseE
Deep calling unto DeepT
Joy to thy spirit brotherA
On every wind of heavenJ
The onward cheer and summonsE
Of Freedom's voice is givenJ
-
Glory to God foreverA
Beyond the despot's willU
The soul of Freedom livethD
Imperishable stillU
The words which thou hast utteredV
Are of that soul a partW
And the good seed thou hast scatteredV
Is springing from the heartW
-
In the evil days before usE
And the trials yet to comeH
In the shadow of the prisonJ
Or the cruel martyrdomH
We will think of thee O brotherA
And thy sainted name shall beP
In the blessing of the captiveX
And the anthem of the freeP
