Rhyme Scheme: AABCCBDDEFFEGGHIJHKK LMMLNNOPPO

O STATE prayer founded never hungA
Such choice upon a people's tongueA
Such power to bless or banB
As that which makes thy whisper FateC
For which on thee the centuries waitC
And destinies of manB
Across thy Alleghanian chainD
With groanings from a land in painD
The west wind finds its wayE
Wild wailing from Missouri's floodF
The crying of thy children's bloodF
Is in thy ears to dayE
And unto thee in Freedom's hourG
Of sorest need God gives the powerG
To ruin or to saveH
To wound or heal to blight or blessI
With fertile field or wildernessJ
A free home or a graveH
Then let thy virtue match the crimeK
Rise to a level with the timeK
And if a son of thineL
Betray or tempt thee Brutus likeM
For Fatherland and Freedom strikeM
As Justice gives the signL
Wake sleeper from thy dream of easeN
The great occasion's forelock seizeN
And let the north wind strongO
And golden leaves of autumn beP
Thy coronal of VictoryP
And thy triumphal songO

John Greenleaf Whittier
