-
Dear Sister while the wise and sageB
Turn coldly from my playful pageB
And count it strange that ripened ageB
Should stoop to boyhood's follyC
I know that thou wilt judge arightD
Of all which makes the heart more lightD
Or lends one star gleam to the nightD
Of clouded MelancholyC
-
Away with weary cares and themesE
Swing wide the moonlit gate of dreamsE
Leave free once more the land which teemsE
With wonders and romancesF
Where thou with clear discerning eyesG
Shalt rightly read the truth which liesG
Beneath the quaintly masking guiseG
Of wild and wizard fanciesH
-
Lo once again our feet we setD
On still green wood paths twilight wetD
By lonely brooks whose waters fretD
The roots of spectral beechesH
Again the hearth fire glimmers o'erI
Home's whitewashed wall and painted floorJ
And young eyes widening to the loreJ
Of faery folks and witchesH
-
Dear heart the legend is not vainK
Which lights that holy hearth againL
And calling back from care and painK
And death's funereal sadnessH
Draws round its old familiar blazeH
The clustering groups of happier daysH
And lends to sober manhood's gazeH
A glimpse of childish gladnessH
-
And knowing how my life hath beenM
A weary work of tongue and penL
A long harsh strife with strong willed menL
Thou wilt not chide my turningN
To con at times an idle rhymeO
To pluck a flower from childhood's climeO
Or listen at Life's noonday chimeO
For the sweet bells of MorningN
