Thine is a grief the depth of which anotherA
May never knowB
Yet o'er the waters O my stricken brotherA
To thee I goB
-
I lean my heart unto thee sadly foldingC
Thy hand in mineD
With even the weakness of my soul upholdingC
The strength of thineD
-
I never knew like thee the dear departedE
I stood not byF
When in calm trust the pure and tranquil heartedE
Lay down to dieF
-
And on thy ears my words of weak condolingC
Must vainly fallG
The funeral bell which in thy heart is tollingC
Sounds over allG
-
I will not mock thee with the poor world's commonH
And heartless phraseI
Nor wrong the memory of a sainted womanH
With idle praiseI
-
With silence only as their benedictionH
God's angels comeJ
Where in the shadow of a great afflictionH
The soul sits dumbJ
-
Yet would I say what thy own heart approvethK
Our Father's willL
Calling to Him the dear one whom He lovethK
Is mercy stillL
-
Not upon thee or thine the solemn angelM
Hath evil wroughtN
Her funeral anthem is a glad evangelM
The good die notO
-
God calls our loved ones but we lose not whollyM
What He hath givenH
They live on earth in thought and deed as trulyM
As in His heavenH
-
And she is with thee in thy path of trialM
She walketh yetP
Still with the baptism of thy self denialM
Her locks are wetP
-
Up then my brother Lo the fields of harvestQ
Lie white in viewR
She lives and loves thee and the God thou servestQ
To both is trueR
-
Thrust in thy sickle England's toilworn peasantsS
Thy call abideQ
And she thou mourn'st a pure and holy presenceT
Shall glean besideQ
