The harp at Nature's advent strungA
Has never ceased to playB
The song the stars of morning sungA
Has never died awayB
-
And prayer is made and praise is givenC
By all things near and farD
The ocean looketh up to heavenC
And mirrors every starD
-
Its waves are kneeling on the strandE
As kneels the human kneeF
Their white locks bowing to the sandE
The priesthood of the seaF
-
They pour their glittering treasures forthG
Their gifts of pearl they bringH
And all the listening hills of earthI
Take up the song they singH
-
The green earth sends its incense upJ
From many a mountain shrineK
From folded leaf and dewy cupJ
She pours her sacred wineK
-
The mists above the morning rillsF
Rise white as wings of prayerL
The altar curtains of the hillsF
Are sunset's purple airL
-
The winds with hymns of praise are loudM
Or low with sobs of painN
The thunder organ of the cloudM
The dropping tears of rainN
-
With drooping head and branches crossedO
The twilight forest grievesF
Or speaks with tongues of PentecostO
From all its sunlit leavesF
-
The blue sky is the temple's archP
Its transept earth and airL
The music of its starry marchP
The chorus of a prayerL
-
So Nature keeps the reverent frameQ
With which her years beganR
And all her signs and voices shameQ
The prayerless heart of manR
