The Waiting Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAAB CDCCD EFEEF GHGGH IEIIE JKJJK

I wait and watch before my eyesA
Methinks the night grows thin and grayB
I wait and watch the eastern skiesA
To see the golden spears upriseA
Beneath the oriflamme of dayB
-
Like one whose limbs are bound in tranceC
I hear the day sounds swell and growD
And see across the twilight glanceC
Troop after troop in swift advanceC
The shining ones with plumes of snowD
-
I know the errand of their feetE
I know what mighty work is theirsF
I can but lift up hands unmeetE
The threshing floors of God to beatE
And speed them with unworthy prayersF
-
I will not dream in vain despairG
The steps of progress wait for meH
The puny leverage of a hairG
The planet's impulse well may spareG
A drop of dew the tided seaH
-
The loss if loss there be is mineI
And yet not mine if understoodE
For one shall grasp and one resignI
One drink life's rue and one its wineI
And God shall make the balance goodE
-
Oh power to do Oh baffled willJ
Oh prayer and action ye are oneK
Who may not strive may yet fulfilJ
The harder task of standing stillJ
And good but wished with God is doneK
