The sword was sheathed in April's sunA
Lay green the fields by Freedom wonA
And severed sections weary of debatesB
Joined hands at last and were United StatesB
-
O City sitting by the SeaC
How proud the day that dawned on theeC
When the new era long desired beganD
And in its need the hour had found the manD
-
One thought the cannon salvos spokeE
The resonant bell tower's vibrant strokeE
The voiceful streets the plaudit echoing hallsF
And prayer and hymn borne heavenward from St Paul'sF
-
How felt the land in every partG
The strong throb of a nation's heartG
As its great leader gave with reverent aweH
His pledge to Union Liberty and LawI
-
That pledge the heavens above him heardJ
That vow the sleep of centuries stirredJ
In world wide wonder listening peoples bentK
Their gaze on Freedom's great experimentL
-
Could it succeed Of honor soldM
And hopes deceived all history toldM
Above the wrecks that strewed the mournful pastN
Was the long dream of ages true at lastN
-
Thank God the people's choice was justO
The one man equal to his trustO
Wise beyond lore and without weakness goodP
Calm in the strength of flawless rectitudeQ
-
His rule of justice order peaceR
Made possible the world's releaseR
Taught prince and serf that power is but a trustO
And rule alone which serves the ruled is justO
-
That Freedom generous is but strongS
In hate of fraud and selfish wrongS
Pretence that turns her holy truths to liesT
And lawless license masking in her guiseT
-
Land of his love with one glad voiceU
Let thy great sisterhood rejoiceU
A century's suns o'er thee have risen and setV
And God be praised we are one nation yetV
-
And still we trust the years to beC
Shall prove his hope was destinyC
Leaving our flag with all its added starsW
Unrent by faction and unstained by warsX
-
Lo where with patient toil he nursedY
And trained the new set plant at firstY
The widening branches of a stately treeC
Stretch from the sunrise to the sunset seaC
-
And in its broad and sheltering shadeZ
Sitting with none to make afraidZ
Were we now silent through each mighty limbA2
The winds of heaven would sing the praise of himA2
-
Our first and best his ashes lieB2
Beneath his own Virginian skyB2
Forgive forget O true and just and braveC2
The storm that swept above thy sacred graveC2
-
For ever in the awful strifeD2
And dark hours of the nation's lifeD2
Through the fierce tumult pierced his warning wordJ
Their father's voice his erring children heardJ
-
The change for which he prayed and soughtE2
In that sharp agony was wroughtE2
No partial interest draws its alien lineF2
'Twixt North and South the cypress and the pineF2
-
One people now all doubt beyondG2
His name shall be our Union bondG2
We lift our hands to Heaven and here and nowH2
Take on our lips the old Centennial vowH2
-
For rule and trust must needs be oursI2
Chooser and chosen both are powersI2
Equal in service as in rights the claimJ2
Of Duty rests on each and all the sameJ2
-
Then let the sovereign millions whereK2
Our banner floats in sun and airK2
From the warm palm lands to Alaska's coldM
Repeat with us the pledge a century oldM
