They left their home of summer easeA
Beneath the lowland's sheltering treesA
To seek by ways unknown to allB
The promise of the waterfallB
-
Some vague faint rumor to the valeC
Had crept perchance a hunter's taleC
Of its wild mirth of waters lostD
On the dark woods through which it tossedD
-
Somewhere it laughed and sang somewhereE
Whirled in mad dance its misty hairE
But who had raised its veil or seenF
The rainbow skirts of that UndineF
-
They sought it where the mountain brookG
Its swift way to the valley tookG
Along the rugged slope they clombH
Their guide a thread of sound and foamH
-
Height after height they slowly wonI
The fiery javelins of the sunI
Smote the bare ledge the tangled shadeJ
With rock and vine their steps delayedJ
-
But through leaf openings now and thenK
They saw the cheerful homes of menK
And the great mountains with their wallB
Of misty purple girdling allB
-
The leaves through which the glad winds blewL
Shared the wild dance the waters knewL
And where the shadows deepest fellM
The wood thrush rang his silver bellM
-
Fringing the stream at every turnN
Swung low the waving fronds of fernN
From stony cleft and mossy sodO
Pale asters sprang and golden rodO
-
And still the water sang the sweetP
Glad song that stirred its gliding feetP
And found in rock and root the keysA
Of its beguiling melodiesA
-
Beyond above its signals flewL
Of tossing foam the birch trees throughL
Now seen now lost but baffling stillQ
The weary seekers' slackening willQ
-
Each called to each 'Lo here Lo thereE
Its white scarf flutters in the air '-
They climbed anew the vision fledR
To beckon higher overheadR
-
So toiled they up the mountain slopeS
With faint and ever fainter hopeS
With faint and fainter voice the brookG
Still bade them listen pause and lookG
-
Meanwhile below the day was doneI
Above the tall peaks saw the sunI
Sink beam shorn to its misty setT
Behind the hills of violetU
-
'Here ends our quest ' the seekers criedV
'The brook and rumor both have liedV
The phantom of a waterfallB
Has led us at its beck and call '-
-
But one with years grown wiser saidR
'So always baffled not misledR
We follow where before us runsW
The vision of the shining onesW
-
'Not where they seem their signals flyX
Their voices while we listen dieX
We cannot keep however fleetP
The quick time of their winged feetP
-
'From youth to age unresting strayY
These kindly mockers in our wayY
Yet lead they not the baffling elvesZ
To something better than themselvesZ
-
'Here though unreached the goal we soughtA2
Its own reward our toil has broughtA2
The winding water's sounding rushB2
The long note of the hermit thrushB2
-
'The turquoise lakes the glimpse of pondC2
And river track and vast beyondC2
Broad meadows belted round with pinesD2
The grand uplift of mountain linesD2
-
'What matter though we seek with painE2
The garden of the gods in vainE2
If lured thereby we climb to greetP
Some wayside blossom Eden sweetP
-
'To seek is better than to gainE2
The fond hope dies as we attainE2
Life's fairest things are those which seemH
The best is that of which we dreamH
-
'Then let us trust our waterfallB
Still flashes down its rocky wallB
With rainbow crescent curved acrossF2
Its sunlit spray from moss to mossF2
-
'And we forgetful of our painE2
In thought shall seek it oft againK
Shall see this aster blossomed sodO
This sunshine of the golden rodO
-
'And haply gain through parting boughsG2
Grand glimpses of great mountain browsG2
Cloud turbaned and the sharp steel sheenF
Of lakes deep set in valleys greenF
-
'So failure wins the consequenceH2
Of loss becomes its recompenseI2
And evermore the end shall tellM
The unreached ideal guided wellM
-
'Our sweet illusions only dieX
Fulfilling love's sure prophecyJ2
And every wish for better thingsK2
An undreamed beauty nearer bringsK2
-
'For fate is servitor of loveL2
Desire and hope and longing proveM2
The secret of immortal youthN2
And Nature cheats us into truthN2
-
'O kind allurers wisely sentO2
Beguiling with benign intentO2
Still move us through divine unrestP2
To seek the loveliest and the bestP2
-
'Go with us when our souls go freeJ2
And in the clear white light to beJ2
Add unto Heaven's beatitudeP2
The old delight of seeking good '-
