Dead Petra in her hill tomb sleepsA
Her stones of emptiness remainB
Around her sculptured mystery sweepsA
The lonely waste of Edom's plainB
-
From the doomed dwellers in the cleftC
The bow of vengeance turns not backD
Of all her myriads none are leftC
Along the Wady Mousa's trackD
-
Clear in the hot Arabian dayE
Her arches spring her statues climbF
Unchanged the graven wonders payE
No tribute to the spoiler TimeF
-
Unchanged the awful lithographG
Of power and glory undertrodE
Of nations scattered like the chaffG
Blown from the threshing floor of GodE
-
Yet shall the thoughtful stranger turnH
From Petra's gates with deeper aweI
To mark afar the burial urnH
Of Aaron on the cliffs of HorJ
-
And where upon its ancient guardE
Thy Rock El Ghor is standing yetE
Looks from its turrets desertwardE
And keeps the watch that God has setE
-
The same as when in thunders loudE
It heard the voice of God to manK
As when it saw in fire and cloudE
The angels walk in Israel's vanK
-
Or when from Ezion Geber's wayE
It saw the long procession fileL
And heard the Hebrew timbrels playE
The music of the lordly NileL
-
Or saw the tabernacle pauseM
Cloud bound by Kadesh Barnea's wellsN
While Moses graved the sacred lawsM
And Aaron swung his golden bellsN
-
Rock of the desert prophet sungO
How grew its shadowing pile at lengthP
A symbol in the Hebrew tongueO
Of God's eternal love and strengthP
-
On lip of bard and scroll of seerJ
From age to age went down the nameQ
Until the Shiloh's promised yearJ
And Christ the Rock of Ages cameQ
-
The path of life we walk to dayE
Is strange as that the Hebrews trodE
We need the shadowing rock as theyE
We need like them the guides of GodE
-
God send His angels Cloud and FireJ
To lead us o'er the desert sandE
God give our hearts their long desireJ
His shadow in a weary landE
