Rhyme Scheme: AA BB CC DD EE FF GG HH II DD JJ KK LL MM NN EE OO CC EE PQ RNo bird song floated down the hill | A |
The tangled bank below was still | A |
- | |
No rustle from the birchen stem | B |
No ripple from the water's hem | B |
- | |
The dusk of twilight round us grew | C |
We felt the falling of the dew | C |
- | |
For from us ere the day was done | D |
The wooded hills shut out the sun | D |
- | |
But on the river's farther side | E |
We saw the hill tops glorified | E |
- | |
A tender glow exceeding fair | F |
A dream of day without its glare | F |
- | |
With us the damp the chill the gloom | G |
With them the sunset's rosy bloom | G |

While dark through willowy vistas seen | H |
The river rolled in shade between | H |
- | |
From out the darkness where we trod | I |
We gazed upon those bills of God | I |

Whose light seemed not of moon or sun | D |
We spake not but our thought was one | D |
- | |
We paused as if from that bright shore | J |
Beckoned our dear ones gone before | J |
- | |
And stilled our beating hearts to hear | K |
The voices lost to mortal ear | K |
- | |
Sudden our pathway turned from night | L |
The hills swung open to the light | L |
- | |
Through their green gates the sunshine showed | M |
A long slant splendor downward flowed | M |
- | |
Down glade and glen and bank it rolled | N |
It bridged the shaded stream with gold | N |
- | |
And borne on piers of mist allied | E |
The shadowy with the sunlit side | E |
- | |
'So ' prayed we 'when our feet draw near | O |
The river dark with mortal fear | O |
- | |
'And the night cometh chill with dew | C |
O Father let Thy light break through | C |
- | |
'So let the hills of doubt divide | E |
So bridge with faith the sunless tide | E |
- | |
'So let the eyes that fail on earth | P |
On Thy eternal hills look forth | Q |
- | |
'And in Thy beckoning angels know | R |
The dear ones whom we loved below ' | - |
