No bird song floated down the hillA
The tangled bank below was stillA
-
No rustle from the birchen stemB
No ripple from the water's hemB
-
The dusk of twilight round us grewC
We felt the falling of the dewC
-
For from us ere the day was doneD
The wooded hills shut out the sunD
-
But on the river's farther sideE
We saw the hill tops glorifiedE
-
A tender glow exceeding fairF
A dream of day without its glareF
-
With us the damp the chill the gloomG
With them the sunset's rosy bloomG
-
While dark through willowy vistas seenH
The river rolled in shade betweenH
-
From out the darkness where we trodI
We gazed upon those bills of GodI
-
Whose light seemed not of moon or sunD
We spake not but our thought was oneD
-
We paused as if from that bright shoreJ
Beckoned our dear ones gone beforeJ
-
And stilled our beating hearts to hearK
The voices lost to mortal earK
-
Sudden our pathway turned from nightL
The hills swung open to the lightL
-
Through their green gates the sunshine showedM
A long slant splendor downward flowedM
-
Down glade and glen and bank it rolledN
It bridged the shaded stream with goldN
-
And borne on piers of mist alliedE
The shadowy with the sunlit sideE
-
'So ' prayed we 'when our feet draw nearO
The river dark with mortal fearO
-
'And the night cometh chill with dewC
O Father let Thy light break throughC
-
'So let the hills of doubt divideE
So bridge with faith the sunless tideE
-
'So let the eyes that fail on earthP
On Thy eternal hills look forthQ
-
'And in Thy beckoning angels knowR
The dear ones whom we loved below '-
