ALL grim and soiled and brown with tanA
I saw a Strong One in his wrathB
Smiting the godless shrines of manA
Along his pathB
The Church beneath her trembling domeC
Essayed in vain her ghostly charmD
Wealth shook within his gilded homeC
With strange alarmD
Fraud from his secret chambers fledE
Before the sunlight bursting inF
Sloth drew her pillow o'er her headE
To drown the dinF
'Spare ' Art implored 'yon holy pileG
That grand old time worn turret spare 'H
Meek Reverence kneeling in the aisleG
Cried out 'Forbear 'H
Gray bearded Use who deaf and blindI
Groped for his old accustomed stoneJ
Leaned on his staff and wept to findI
His seat o'erthrownJ
Young Romance raised his dreamy eyesK
O'erhung with paly locks of goldL
'Why smite ' he asked in sad surpriseK
'The fair the old 'H
Yet louder rang the Strong One's strokeM
Yet nearer flashed his axe's gleamN
Shuddering and sick of heart I wokeM
As from a dreamN
I looked aside the dust cloud rolledL
The Waster seemed the Builder tooO
Upspringing from the ruined OldL
I saw the NewO
'T was but the ruin of the badP
The wasting of the wrong and illQ
Whate'er of good the old time hadP
Was living stillQ
Calm grew the brows of him I fearedR
The frown which awed me passed awayS
And left behind a smile which cheeredR
Like breaking dayS
The grain grew green on battle plainsT
O'er swarded war mounds grazed the cowU
The slave stood forging from his chainsT
The spade and ploughU
Where frowned the fort pavilions gayS
And cottage windows flower entwinedI
Looked out upon the peaceful bayS
And hills behindI
Through vine wreathed cups with wine once redE
The lights on brimming crystal fellV
Drawn sparkling from the rivulet headE
And mossy wellV
Through prison walls like Heaven sent hopeW
Fresh breezes blew and sunbeams strayedX
And with the idle gallows ropeW
The young child playedX
Where the doomed victim in his cellV
Had counted o'er the weary hoursY
Glad school girls answering to the bellV
Came crowed with flowersY
Grown wiser for the lesson givenJ
I fear no longer for I knowJ
That where the share is deepest drivenJ
The best fruits growJ
The outworn rite the old abuseZ
The pious fraud transparent grownJ
The good held captive in the useZ
Of wrong aloneJ
These wait their doom from that great lawA2
Which makes the past time serve to dayS
And fresher life the world shall drawA2
From their decayS
Oh backward looking son of timeB2
The new is old the old is newO
The cycle of a change sublimeB2
Still sweeping throughO
So wisely taught the Indian seerC2
Destroying Seva forming BrahmD2
Who wake by turns Earth's love and fearE2
Are one the sameF2
Idly as thou in that old dayS
Thou mournest did thy sire repineO
So in his time thy child grown grayS
Shall sigh for thineO
But life shall on and upward goJ
Th' eternal step of Progress beatsG2
To that great anthem calm and slowJ
Which God repeatsG2
Take heart the Waster builds againO
A charm d life old Goodness hathB
The tares may perish but the grainO
Is not for deathH2
God works in all things all obeyS
His first propulsion from the nightI2
Wake thou and watch the world is grayS
With morning lightI2
