The Red River Voyageur Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFF GHIH JKAK FLGL FFAF MBJB IHJH HKAK DFIF

Out and in the river is windingA
The links of its long red chainB
Through belts of dusky pine landC
And gusty leagues of plainB
-
Only at times a smoke wreathD
With the drifting cloud rack joinsE
The smoke of the hunting lodgesF
Of the wild AssiniboinsF
-
Drearily blows the north windG
From the land of ice and snowH
The eyes that look are wearyI
And heavy the hands that rowH
-
And with one foot on the waterJ
And one upon the shoreK
The Angel of Shadow gives warningA
That day shall be no moreK
-
Is it the clang of wild geeseF
Is it the Indian's yellL
That lends to the voice of the north windG
The tones of a far off bellL
-
The voyageur smiles as he listensF
To the sound that grows apaceF
Well he knows the vesper ringingA
Of the bells of St BonifaceF
-
The bells of the Roman MissionM
That call from their turrets twainB
To the boatman on the riverJ
To the hunter on the plainB
-
Even so in our mortal journeyI
The bitter north winds blowH
And thus upon life's Red RiverJ
Our hearts as oarsmen rowH
-
And when the Angel of ShadowH
Rests his feet on wave and shoreK
And our eyes grow dim with watchingA
And our hearts faint at the oarK
-
Happy is he who hearethD
The signal of his releaseF
In the bells of the Holy CityI
The chimes of eternal peaceF
