A sound as if from bells of silverA
Or elfin cymbals smitten clearB
Through the frost pictured panes I hearC
-
A brightness which outshines the morningD
A splendor brooking no delayE
Beckons and tempts my feet awayE
-
I leave the trodden village highwayE
For virgin snow paths glimmering throughF
A jewelled elm tree avenueF
-
Where keen against the walls of sapphireA
The gleaming tree bolls ice embossedG
Hold up their chandeliers of frostG
-
I tread in Orient halls enchantedH
I dream the Saga's dream of cavesI
Gem lit beneath the North Sea wavesI
-
I walk the land of EldoradoJ
I touch its mimic garden bowersK
Its silver leaves and diamond flowersK
-
The flora of the mystic mine worldL
Around me lifts on crystal stemsM
The petals of its clustered gemsM
-
What miracle of weird transformingD
In this wild work of frost and lightN
This glimpse of glory infiniteO
-
This foregleam of the Holy CityP
Like that to him of Patmos givenQ
The white bride coming down from heavenQ
-
How flash the ranked and mail clad aldersM
Through what sharp glancing spears of reedsM
The brook its muffled water leadsM
-
Yon maple like the bush of HorebR
Burns unconsumed a white cold fireA
Rays out from every grassy spireS
-
Each slender rush and spike of mulleinQ
Low laurel shrub and drooping fernQ
Transfigured blaze where'er I turnQ
-
How yonder Ethiopian hemlockT
Crowned with his glistening circlet standsM
What jewels light his swarthy handsM
-
Here where the forest opens southwardU
Between its hospitable pinesM
As through a door the warm sun shinesM
-
The jewels loosen on the branchesM
And lightly as the soft winds blowJ
Fall tinkling on the ice belowJ
-
And through the clashing of their cymbalsM
I hear the old familiar fallV
Of water down the rocky wallV
-
Where from its wintry prison breakingD
In dark and silence hidden longW
The brook repeats its summer songW
-
One instant flashing in the sunshineQ
Keen as a sabre from its sheathX
Then lost again the ice beneathX
-
I hear the rabbit lightly leapingD
The foolish screaming of the jayE
The chopper's axe stroke far awayE
-
The clamor of some neighboring barn yardY
The lazy cock's belated crowJ
Or cattle tramp in crispy snowJ
-
And as in some enchanted forestZ
The lost knight hears his comrades singD
And near at hand their bridles ringD
-
So welcome I these sounds and voicesM
These airs from far off summer blownQ
This life that leaves me not aloneQ
-
For the white glory overawes meP
The crystal terror of the seerC
Of Chebar's vision blinds me hereC
-
Rebuke me not O sapphire heavenQ
Thou stainless earth lay not on meP
Thy keen reproach of purityP
-
If in this August presence chamberA
I sigh for summer's leaf green gloomA2
And warm airs thick with odorous bloomA2
-
Let the strange frost work sink and crumbleB2
And let the loosened tree boughs swingD
Till all their bells of silver ringD
-
Shine warmly down thou sun of noontimeC2
On this chill pageant melt and moveD2
The winter's frozen heart with loveE2
-
And soft and low thou wind south blowingD
Breathe through a veil of tenderest hazeM
Thy prophecy of summer daysM
-
Come with thy green relief of promiseM
And to this dead cold splendor bringD
The living jewels of the springD
